Thread OP

Here in Queretaro, in the highlands of central Mexico, a fairly common barrel cactus about the size of a basketball with several sprouts at its base has begun blooming. They grow wild on thin soil atop metamorphic rhyolite and consolidated volcanic tuff. Using David Aquino's "Flora del Bajio" cactus treatment, the cactus keys out right to Stenocactus ochoterenanus. However, details in the description aren't quite right, and the flower color is a bit off. Especially the central spines are all wrong, and no images on the Internet seem to match. Attached are some photos so you can see what I mean. I look forward to some ideas.

By golly Baja_Costero I believe you're right and I thank you for the help. Once more cacti start flowering here, you'll probably be hearing from me again. Saludos de Queretaro.

I think you may have a fordii or cylindraceus . It reminds me a lot of the "one good one I used to have". Sadly all I got out of the plant is a reminder of why I bit off more than I could chew at the time...

I lean towards cylindraceus or acanthodes (the latter is the accepted name, while the former is the more widely used synonym).

In your climate these will need to be in the fastest draining soil possible and probably would like to be very very dry throughout most of the winter.

What has happened to Ferocacti I put in too much shade is that if they do grow they tend to really show low light effects in their spines - spines go super thin to non-existent. I have a F. latispinus that clearly is it because of the body and older spines but if I'd just show pictures of the youngest spines you'd not ID it as such. Problem is that F. latispinus is not quite able to deal with full sun here, many Feros are, so if you like me have most full sun planting spots or if there is shade most full shade then it is hard to get that plant to be where it is happy.

It might still grow just fine, but it will not look like it is normal impressively spined self.
It is what it is!

The core rotted. It wasnt a classic wet rot like most cacti suffered at the time, or the dry rot parodias experienced. It probably went down to the bad soil. I kept it alive for a long time , and it was doing for a couple of years. But somehow I messed up. Crying
Its death might have contributed quite a bit to my "getting good". I know it was ...when I was still in faculty. Might have been late 2017 or early 18. Before I joined you guys.
