I've had my rose bush for 3 years, which is in a large tub on my balcony. 1st year it had 8 blooms, 2nd year it only had 4 blooms but this year there are no buds at all. I'm a novice and wondered if this was normal? Thank you
I agree with Calif Sue... my guess is not enough sun. The canes are very thin for a 3 year old rose. I'm assuming this is a west-facing balcony (based on your noon to sunset sun description). But in the more northern latitudes, the sun isn't very strong, so even that might not be enough sun. Have you ever pruned it down? Do you fertilize it?
Hi, I pruned them in autumn after the blooms had gone. I read it somewhere, not sure where. Is this wrong? I have given it rose fertiliser.
Thanks for your help. Sue
Have scrapped off some of the compost on top and added new compost? If not now would be a good time. Also, roses are heavy feeders, so a little once a month will give you more blooms.
I've had a problem with pigeons taking over my balcony for the past 6 months and destroying everything in their path. I bought all my plants in, but couldn't move the rose as it's too big. My beautiful warm wishes rose has been at the mercy of the pigeons enduring excrement etc being dropped on it. It's bravely given two flowers that smell as beautiful as ever, but they've come out wrinkly and look half dead. I'm hoping they will come back with a prune, but not sure how or when to do this. Please would someone advise me. Kind regards

Pruning is normally done in the very early spring, before the new bud eyes begin to swell. I would also give it some synthetic liquid fertilizer. But it's late in the season to be fertilizing roses so perhaps wait till next spring.

The soil also looks like it's dropped too low below the bud union graft. The bloom itself looks like what happens to mine with high heat, it looks sunburned. You can trim that off.
