Not where I would have preferred to get one, but they happened to have about 6 in stock when I went last week and couldn't resist. The bigger ones were tagged as "Bonsai", this one was tagged as "Succulent Pochette" ($16)... so absolutely no idea what variety, what color flowers, nada. Which in a way makes it fun to watch it grow. All that the tags say is to "display in medium to bright light, and slowly pour 2 ounces of water at the base of the plant once a month."

It's currently in a 4" plastic pot that at least has a drainage hole. I pruned it to where the 2 red lines are marked. The way the top growth was stretched out, and since I found them inside the store, it looked like none of them were getting enough sun. So I've been gradually moving it outdoors, an hour of east sun first day and then back in until it got shady and increasing that time slowly, bringing it in at night (still can get below 60 some nights here) and if there's a chance of rain. Today it's outside all day since it's been overcast, no direct sun. But I plan to increase the time outside until it can stay out in full sun all day. I'm assuming a thorough watering until it drains out once a week is more than sufficient... or is that too frequent?

I want to repot it though first thing and get it out of that plastic pot, and I'm assuming the moss on top isn't good for it either. I'll get a ceramic pot about 1" bigger and I've read about all the special potting mix ingredients to get for it.

But any advice or if I'm about to screw up something with my plan for it, please let me know, I've never had one before. They had bigger ones for only $10 more, but it seemed more fun to grow it from smaller. If I was certain of what they were or the color, that probably would have changed my mind. I will bring in for winter and I can keep it in a south window.

Adeniums have only 2 seasons > wet - and - dry

wet = the active growing season (summer months in the northern hemisphere) water adeniums like a tropical & to saturation

dry = the dormant season (winter months in the northern hemisphere) treat adeniums like a cacti

50°F is a "safe" stay outdoor temperature ...a few hours between 45° & 50° wont do much harm - Assuming the plant has not been watered and potting media is dry

- Watering -

keep track of local temperatures ~

70's water once every 10 days or so
80's water once every 7 days or so
90's water once every 5 days or so
100's water once every 3 days or so

count *any* rainfall as a watering day

make certain water drains out almost as fast as putting it on

cut back watering if night temps dip into 50's / 40's

Never allow adenium to sit in a full of water pot saucer

it is better to not water .... than over-water

rather than getting glazed ceramic pot - find a non-glazed Terra-cotta pot for it .... moisture will evaporate through the sides of the pot ...

allow some extra room in new pot .... fresh potting media and a repot almost guarantees the plant will take off

Thank you for all that info! Yes, I was referring to a non-glazed terracotta pot, which I often just call "ceramic" because it's just as breakable! Hilarious! I'll have to stop calling them that, but I did mean a plain old terracotta pot for air, no glazing.

The soil it's potted in right now seems too moist for it, which is why I've not let it stay outside if it's raining yet. Once I get it potted in your mixture you've posted, I won't worry about rain unless we get downpours for several days.

I've been hesitant about leaving it outside under 60° yet only because I know it's been sitting in a warm store 24/7 and didn't want to shock it with too cool temps that it's not used to. I did plan on leaving it out day and night once it's acclimated.

I didn't put any fungicide on the 2 cuts, is it really needed? Also, I've read that diatomaceous earth works as a fungicide, true? If not I'll pick up either Bomide fungicide or cinnamon for next time.

I believe you meant non-glazed Terra-cotta pot ...really ... Rolling on the floor laughing

have lost count - but all my adeniums have survived numerous hurricanes & tropical storms .... and I owe that to the chunky fast drain mix

your recent prune / cuts are probably okay without anything ....just try to keep those cuts dry - and let the cut surface harden or "callus over" ...they will be fine

Good one Nancy! The one you got is seedgrown most likely from Live Trends. I bought a couple late last year and they bloomed this spring, one bloomed red and another one bloomed pink.

They are blooming size so you might see it bloom this year.

That's good to hear about blooming size... but now I'm tempted to go back for one of the larger ones too! Hilarious!

The tag about the light and water was a "Live Trends Lowe's Exclusive," so it sounds the same. Of course it also called it "Succulent Pochette", but pink or red flowers would be very nice.

Edit: These are the terracotta pots I usually get, my orchids are planted in them as well. My local garden center that I frequent carries them. I love that they're not the typical orangy color, but still a clay pot so they're pretty cheap. They also come in a whitish color with cream swirls in it.

Yes given good amount of sun (and a little bit of blooming food) will encourage it to bloom. Those terracotta ones are good pots and I've had success using the orchid clay pots too.

if they have that same pot, in a shallower/shorter azalea pot that would be twice as good ...

deep pots tend to grow carrot like caudexes ..... a shallow pot forces the caudex to grow outwards

a plant saucer with a hole drilled through the bottom also makes a satisfactory adenium pot

go get the other adeniums ...load up the shopping cart ... just so you wont be kicking yourself later

what on earth is a "Succulent Pochette" ?

I agree with James! The bigger one that is $10 more in plastic pot might be a grafted one.

I'm pretty sure I also saw shorter/fatter pots there, so I'm waiting to check and not using the one I have on hand that's tall like in the image.

I might go tomorrow or Monday the latest! Where they were hidden at, I doubt many people saw them.

And no idea. The tag that was on it also says:
"Pochette
Pochette Story
French for pouch, Pochette combines a smooth silhouette inspired by a purse with an elegant gold strip for a sophisticated design."

Unless they think the caudex resembles a pouch? I really thought it was a mistag. Googling "Succulent Pochette" brings up all sorts of odd things... images of Echeveria succulents, an InstaCart item without an image... someone there has a real vivid imagination and a twisted marketing sense is all I can think of.

whatever pot you decide on ... adenium have zero respect for expensive pots ...

ever notice what trees can do to sidewalks and driveways ?? ...adenium will do that to pots if given half the chance

google translate didn't help much with my "Succulent Pochette" inquiry ..
"Succulent Pouch" ... a what ??

whatever, go get as many as you can .... don't forget the azalea pots

I went back yesterday and they were all there. The larger ones had really interestingly shaped caudex (caudexes? caudi?), but they didn't look healthy. The 2 best ones had small black bugs all over the soil and jumping, and the other had a part of the caudex that looked like it was under soil at one point, and now was just rotting and bent, and a slight touch would it out of the soil. I'd have taken a chance if they would have given a discount on either, but they didn't.

The small ones... I'm not sure they're adeniums. I swear it looks like they grafted a ficus onto a caudex (is that a thing?). But the tags still say the same "succulent" info, water 2 ounces, etc. Are these 2 adeniums or something weird that Lowe's buys?

black bugs - and - jumping around are probably fungus gnats ...common around wet potting mixes ....they might "go-away" after a total repot into something chunky

this one ...think you are right - stems look like a ficus of some sort

with stem and upper root tied into a knot(s) ....

2nd pic looks like a ficus too ....does look like a graft ....onto what looks, sort of like an adenium caudex ......but the "skin" is all wrong .... adenium caudex were roots at one time, skin should be almost smooth ....without lenticular leaf scars or horizontal lines ....verdict Thumbs down

Thanks for that. I'll take these 2 back in a few days. I'd go today but we're in for a massive storm and then heat wave that's supposed to go over 100°, so will wait until that passes. Oddly the caudex on the other larger ones did have leaves that looked like adenium, not these ficus-looking leaves. But the caudex looked like these 2 smaller ones, twisted in weird ways, forming tunnels to go through (which some were packed with dirt inside those open "tunnels" even though above the soil line).

those are lifted or raised plants ..... imagine what "can be" just below the soil line -
an analogy might be, "we only see the tip of the iceberg"

and that's the goal of raising / lifting the plant every few years ....

the bonus ... the plant will eventually break the pot, as roots expand ...by raising / lifting .... the plant wont break the pot and it can stay in its old home for a few more years

Gigi, yours are beautiful. I need to find at least one like that, preferably locally.

I had read about raising the caudex a bit each time you have to repot. I'm guessing if you're able to do it depends on what it looks like when all the soil is knocked away?

They didn't have my gray clay pots in a shallow version, just shorter bowls that would be way too large right now. So I ended up getting boring typical orangy clay shorter pots. Either type certainly is cheap enough, I wouldn't worry about them breaking at all.

Thank you both for all the info for this newbie.

true - raising / lifting requires pulling the plant out of its pot...washing off old potting media ....then lifting about an inch higher from where plant was ... this will expose 1" of the caudex - afterwards, back-fill with fresh potting media

there are benefits of repotting with fresh potting media .... first, can almost guarantee the plant will take off in new growth ....it wont look like the same plant

if stem tips are pruned at the same time you will get more flowers too

can even recycle the old inorganic potting media (rocks, pebbles, sand) ...by washing and left to dry in sun to "sanitize"
