Kind of makes you wonder how they did that.

We used the stiff metal grid the first couple of years for our small pond, but I found it just to rough on my hands and lower arms to get underneath to do the cleanups. Leaves and blooms grow/bloom above it. We switched to Deer netting last year.

Thread OP

Well, you may have read on my other post that I finally took some action, after I only have four goldfish left. One is injured. A big black plastic pot, the kind trees come in was used. I put a good sized hole at the top of the pot, then turned the pot upside down, then sat it in the pond close to the wall of the pond. Then I put cement blocks on top. When the Heron comes, the fish swim inside the hole, then up. The Heron can't get them. Seems to work fine so far. What do you think? Smiling Arum

Glad you found a solution that works for you. Our resident visitor still comes and looks. My husband heard noise on the roof. Guess who was checking out the pond?Thumb of 2013-05-11/Jewell/92d7fb

I am about to do a pond for frogs and fish. I have read some good ideas here. I have noticed several places on my island have netting. I am not sure what they are trying to exclude. I have a feeling it is kingfishers including kookaburras. I have had White-faced Herons visit, which gobble most things. I think I am going to find out.
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.

I can't help but chuckle when I read about the herons fishing out of the ponds. When I was a kid, a friend of mine had a pond with many goldfish. We were sitting at her kitchen table watching this beautiful white heron next to the pond. Every once in a while it would dip down and then throw it's head back. We kept wondering what it was doing then all of a sudden my friend let out a squeal "My fish!!!!!" And she went running out to the pond. Yep....she lost about half of them...all while we were enjoying the show!!! LOL
I hate losing plants....I know they are "just plants" but when you nurse them along and baby them and get them to grow, bloom, and be pretty and they die....it's like losing a friend..... Crying
