At my house, gopher tortoise burrows are oval shaped.
In my previous garden, all the armadillo holes were round like the ones pictured...
Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news.
Rabbits in my experience... Barely dig... Just enough to get the babies below ground level... Nothing like Bugs bunny...

Good point, stone....I hadn't really thought about the shape of the hole. Only thought of rabbit warren because I see a lot of their poop in the memory garden including on the graves. Armadillo does seem more logical though then tortoise now that I think about it. Oh well Shrug! a mystery until hopefully I get to see the culprit critter.

My neighbor had animal control out yesterday. I asked the guy if he'd look at my hole and give me his opinion.....he said big rat (roof, field, wharf whatever ya'll call them) Glare think I'd rather have an armadillo. He told me to go ahead and fill in the hole which I did this morning. Crud I was really wanting a tortoise.

Looked like armadillo to me...
I fill those with gravel... Otherwise, they just dig them back out.

The armadillos here don't come out until dark. I relocated two, but there's still at least one more around.

In Central Florida, I've seen armadillos at all hours, morning, afternoon, evening, and of course at night. It still surprises me to see them in daylight though.
