Is it too late to start a brugmansia in August? I'm in PNW, Zone 8, with mild winters, but quite wet (except last winter---climate change?) If it is not too late to plant, does anyone here offer plants or starts for sale? I'm an experienced gardener, but have not grown brugs.

Thx for any advice you can offer.

oregonmarty,
Come on up to WA State and I have 4 flats of babies in one gallon pots ready to find a new home. I was going to offer then in the spring. Unknow varieties, just limbs that were taken from what we have. These broke off when moving the collections out of their winter home. Want to come up?

Just my opinion, and I'm originally from Vancouver, BC also nominally zone 8. I don't think brugmansia are going to survive your winters in Oregon even if it doesn't frost or snow. You have weeks of short, grey, wet days in winter and the nights will go down into the 40's or 30's nearly every night.

Zone 8 in Florida is much MUCH different than it is in Oregon, that's all I'm saying. Down here we have to protect our brugs on the odd night or two that plunges into the 40's or 30's during winter, but we get longer, sunny days in the 70's and 80's here as well - I call it "Pacific Northwest summer" weather that we have almost all winter except for the occasional cold front that makes it this far south. So my brugs grow and bloom all winter here as long as I remember to mulch and protect them.

My mother grew brugs in Vancouver, but she brought them indoors for the winter. Thankfully she had a "sunny" southeast facing window where they were able to at least keep growing through the dark, damp winters.

I'd advise you to plan to keep it in a large pot, and move it indoors for the winter if you have a sunny window for it to live in front of. If you do this then, yes, for sure you can plant a new brug any time.

I don't mind when mine get frost bitten. It keeps them in control somewhat and they grow so fast that a month later you won't even see it. If you have serious frost for more than a few days though I would toss a sheet over the top.

Thanks everyone for your replies and advice. Sorry for the group-mail, but I couldn't figure out how to reply to individual posts. Karmahappytoes: Thank you so much for your kind invitation, but I'm staying home due to Covid around me. I would love to see your plants in bloom. I'll send you a Treemail with a question.

OregonMarty, good morning and thanks for the treemail! I totally get where you are coming from on the covid in your area. Brugmansia season is started here in the PNW with the cooler temps as we are now starting to see them come alive. Yes, they will be going into their Brug house in just a few weeks, mid Oct the yard will be bare as we are getting ready for winter. The only one I know of that will winter in the OR/WA state area is the B. Frosty Pink if it's an older plant with mulch and plastic protection. It can be done in a warmer microclimate area. I have been growing them since 1995! They are starting to bloom here and will post plenty of photos for you!!

OregonMarty, did you get any of the terrible wind we had yesterday? I spent 4 hours on cleanup and all the plants on the driveway need to be moved again. I couldn't believe all the plants that were tipped over. So much damage!! Makes one, say enough and start cutting back. Done gardening!!! So much smoke and evergreen in the air. All the blooms on the brugs just dried up! Glad I started stripping them Friday morning! I had a couple visitor this week and it's so great to see the younger generations excited about gardening!! Looking forward in your visit next year.
