i have always wanted a Pitcher Plant but they seem to cost a lot from what i have seen - I found this one at Walmart for $8.00 so I decided to go ahead and buy it. I live in zone 7b should I go ahead and keep it outside and repot into a bigger pot or wait until spring so that it can transition a little better the seasons and the cooler temps?

I scanned the barcode and it says it is a "Maroon" pitcher plant but I look at some pics online and not sure if that is correct.

Can all pitcher plants survive outside? I have a nice south facing covered porch that i can keep it under during the winter but it can still get down pretty cold at night sometimes - around 13F

Thanks Bill

It's not pure, it is a hybrid between S. purpurea x rubra.
I would not re-pot now. The plant should be going dormant now.
Wait till spring when the plant starts growing again if you want to repot.
I've grown many pitcher plants here in PA.
I moved my plants to an unheated garage once winter temps reached freezing throughout the day.

Thanks Steve,

Should I put it outside to help it go dormant and bring it in when the temps drop to freezing or is it okay to keep inside until spring?

Thanks
Bill

If it were mine I would place it outside.
Not sure of the growing conditions it was in before you got it, I'd put it somewhere were it gets filtered sunlight.
Early Spring I'd place it outside were it gets direct sunlight all day.

It may not go dormant inside, and there would no be enough sunlight for it.

This is a good video explanation about the need for winter dormancy for Sarracenias and other temperate carnivores: click on the link so you can watch it.

Sarracenias need a cold winter dormancy to grow well. I have one that spends its summer inside on a south window sill and goes out for the winter. All the rest stay outside all year round. We usually have a couple nights down into the teens - those nights I throw a sheet over them. They should always be sitting in water.

When you repot, buy medium from a carnivorous plant website as Saracenia potting requirements are very specific: unfortified peat and perlite or sand. No potting soil, no nutrients.

Thanks for the information everyone - I will hopefully keep this guy alive!!

I do have one more question - it is in a very small plant and since my zone gets freezing temps should I repot it into a larger pot to help with insulating the roots?

Thanks

I do not see a need to repot.
