I'm sure the overwintering process for EE's has been covered. I am familiar with digging up the inground tubers and storing them. However. I'm trying to overwinter two "potted" EE's I understand you can cut back the leaves/stems to about 6 inches and bring in the pots. I am hoping to keep them dormant till spring. Is there anything else I should do? Does the soils need to be dry before bringing in the pot? Any suggestions? Thank you!

Assuming Colocasia esculenta... If you let frost take the leaves, the plant will go dormant and then you can put the pots in your basement. When I did that, I watered just enough/often enough so the soil doesn't get completely dry but I'm not sure that's necessary. The pot will be a lot lighter if it's dry at the time, but I remember bringing in heavy, wet pots.

Thanks Tiffany! Yes, they are all Colocasia Esculenta in pots. Decided to keep the potted Diamond Head along with two other EE in my porch to overwinter. I will keep the other potted one dormant in the crawl space till spring.

JoeBrug, they look like they will do well there, are you going to heat that area? We just cut the leaves off and put them in the Brug House. For years I just brought them inside and treated like a house plant.

Karma, the goal is to heat it to 60 degrees except during the dog days of Winterโ€ฆprobably 55-60 degrees.

I cut most of the leaves as well. Kept only one or two. The Diamond Head will get trimmed tomorrow. I ran out of timeโ€ฆand energy. Lol.

I've tried keeping them as house plants in past years but they did not get much sun so I couldn't keep them happy. They looked droopy most of the time

Happy to swap tales, Joe. : ) That's what happened when I tried to keep them going in the house over winter, not enough sun & they got spider mites.

It looks like bigger pots &/or some separation might be in the future, maybe next year. The bulbs keep getting bigger and make offsets.

Tiffany,

I like swapping stories and picking up new ideas and tips. I'm all ears!

The green EE's you see in these pics were in the ground. The leaves grew to 30 inches. I put them in a smaller pot to keep them in the porch semi dormant. First time doing this for me. I always dig them up and store them.

The one I had in a pot all summer was in a 17" pot and did really well. I'm keeping it dormant in the crawl space. Those in the back ground are cannas that will go in the crawl space as well.

Spider mites, heck yeah ugh!
My black runners also get droopy but try to send out a leaf now and then, maybe exploring to see if spring has come haha.
Plant it and they will come.

Yeah, spider mites are always a problem with my tropical plants. My Alocasia Zebrina and Purple Sword get regular treatment made of neem oil and Castille soap mix. Otherwise, the spider mites get the upper hand
