An TreeMail request for information prompted me to find what I used to educate the public here at a county fair after finding out I couldn't submit a plant without a bond to insure no one would touch the plant with a bloom.

I didn't understand what you were saying about the bond?

purpleinopp, Since Brugmansia are toxic they wanted an ungodly amount of money in a bond to pay encase someone touches and get sick. I offered to put it behind a glass screen but they wouldn't go for it. I took the gal outside and pointed at the toxic plants they had planted in their gardens outside the building. I also mentioned that their gardening/nurseries show and none of those plants are monitored.

Purpleinopp, this is why we take what we do here seriously! Our home is under surveillance with 20 cameras! We had a couple unsavery neighbors that would wait until dark and steal from others, paint the objects and steal plants. We also caught them fencing stolen and driving about with a blatter in the back of their truck stealing gas from folks' vehicles. When some of our test plants and garbage can disappeared up went the cameras and we started turning folks in! I had a good laugh when the Police came to my husband and he told them ask my wife. The drug dealer hopped the fence and took off while they were at the front door. Needless to say I just also laughted when they came and said I was growing pot, Pot doesn't have a red bloom does it?? Going to have to write a book!! I went out to the fair again and there were Brugmansia plants at one of the sales. No one said a word to the nursery selling them and when I saw a kid grab the plant our came my hand cleaner and I grabbed the mom and seller to educate. Needless to say the seller put the plant up higher as they had no clue, it's just got a beautiful bloom!!

That sounds very scary and irritating. I would not want to live where all of that is going on. I used to, but moved away from it.

Purpleinopp,
We looked into moving and decided the cameras were the best thing! Needless to say the folks figured out we were staying, and they needed to leave! It's been so quite since they left this past year. The folks in power were glad we kept an eye on them.
Funny thing is my DH works for those folks! They know I'm a strong advocate for Citizen's policing with the cuts in law enforcement.

zeta7,
If you understand about them, you shouldn't have an issue. With that stated even the most experienced folks have had issues. Just a touch of the eye after touching them can cause an issue. Then there are the kids that think they can use these to get high and end up doing more harm to themselves. I know of places that have tried to ban them due to kids using them. Accidents do happen and I can admit to trimming ours when we had a collection of 127 varieties and cut my hand. I knew it should of had stitches but knew too I had an appointment coming up in a few days. I will tell you my then doc screamed at me when I told her what happened as she saw the way my hand was bandaged. Long story short when she removed the bandage she was shocked at how well it healed. My folder at the office has big bold letters on the front 'Brugmansia Grower!' Just be careful when handling them.

hi, I find this so interesting. (And, good for you, karma, with your protection Thumbs up )
My library has a building caretaker (do it all man) who loves outside work. When he transferred here from another branch, he wanted to bring his beloved Datura angels trumpet, single white flowers... I tried to raise concerns but nobody would listen. They grow out on one corner, kids don't go there and if anyone comes at night, well, we haven't been aware of that.
at home, behind our heighborhood, we had a small farm (couple of horses) get converted to housing. At one stage, the cleared fields put up a huge crop of common jimsonweed. Amazing! and we saw a couple guys walking through it who I swear were picking pods in a large amount.

But karma, best of your story is showing them all the 'toxic' stuff they already had and didn't know Thumbs up
Plant it and they will come.

Thank you @sallyg. We here have gone beyond protection of our property with
6 foot PVC fence in the back and half of the front yard. Posted signs and have
cameras with night vision. We have hand sanitizer for those that feel the need to
touch after advising them not to touch. We have gone to appointments only. I used to attend plant shows and educate growers that they plants should be placed up higher. I also try to advise folks too that there is now a difference in the two Datura
as they have been divided into two groups Brugmansia/Angle Trumpets, downward blooms verses Datura/Devil Trumpets, upward blooms with will self-pollinate. I will say animals are smarter than humans when it comes to these plants.
