Love Plumerias
Hello everyone I am new to this forum and would like some information on my plumerias. I live in Hawaii and as you probably know it's warm here year round. I have two questions for now.
1-ph of soil. Is the soil ph affected by the city water which is very very alkaline, measures 8+. This makes it very hard to keep my soil ph low enough for plumerias. I have been adding additives to raise or lower the ph for each pot. Even adding 1 cup vinegar to 1 gal of water to use for watering my plumerias.

2-Starting new root cuttings here in November. I plant year round and wonder if I should wait to spring like it is suggested.

I use soil acidifier and hydrogenated lime for adjusting PH.

I don't have the problem you have with pH, @grhancock. I would think that with highly alkaline water, you would need to acidify it to get it into the neutral to slightly acidic range. I do not know your location and thus your climate (you can add that information on your profile so that it will be seen when you post), but like you, I root plumeria year 'round. Dormancy certainly will make rooting October through January tricky. Most people root their cuttings in the spring and summer, when active growth is taking place.

If you are in a very dry climate (low humidity), I think that you will benefit by misting your plants often. These are tropical trees and do best with high humidity.

Thanks so much for your reply. I think the high alkaline water I am using contributes to my problems. I check the PH in my soil with a stick meter and seems no matter what I do my soil ph is high 7's to 8. Even with additives to lower ph. I am planning to use a 1.5gal bottle with 1 cup of vinegar diluted in it to water my plumeria soil. Anything else I could try would be helpful.

I simply don't know, Gary. I've grown and propagated 1000's of plumeria over a 30 year period, but I've never had to deal with a water issue. There are numerous commercial growers in HI. Contact a couple of them and let them help you with this problem.

I'm sorry. I've stated before that not once ever have I checked the Ph of any soil any plant and I do just fine. Being in Hawaii, you shouldn't have very many issues growing plumeria. Do you even NEED to water your plants there? I wouldn't try putting too much science into it unless you're trying control groups and such. If they are growing and healthy, that's all that matters. Give them sun and feed them. They will bloom.
