Thread OP

sorry for the some what unrelated question but i have no experience in grow tents and i have a some what of a big brain idea for one

so first off a bit of backstory
i live in aus and it is currently no less than 30c even at night and i have no ac in my apartment.. even if i did it is far too hot and my place has bad insulation so it would just be a VERY costly slightly cooler fan at best...
so if i cant make my room cooler... what if i made a smaller better insulated room and cooled that?

so the question at hand... how feasible would it be to use a portable ac unit to cool a grow tent like this one from "kogan" (Greenfingers Grow Tent 240x120x200cm) for $197 (i cant post links)
it seems to have all the room needed to fit a chair and table for a pc (the pc tower would be outside for less heating) and with a hard floor mat for the chair it should protect the bottom of the tent also it has ducting holes and power cable holes built in so very convent

what are people thoughts and ideas on this and would you be able to recommend any types or brands of tent?
is the one i linked a good price?
i wonder if i could invert the covering so its shiny side out?
how durable are tents like this?
do they normally last years or are they more single use things?
this one seems to be reasonably padded but its hard to tell

thanks for your time

My climate is also hot in the summer, and I do not have whole-house a/c. 30 degrees C (86F) would not be considered a really hot day here, but we do cool off at night--usually--unless the humidity is up.
I have used a portable a/c unit that vented out the window to cool just the bedroom, about 170 square feet. It worked fine until it failed, I replaced it with the smallest possible window a/c. So, not a grow tent but I have one room that stays comfortable.
Welcome!

Welcome! to the site! I'm not sure about using a grow tent or greenhouse for this purpose, as my impression is that it would not do the job for your application (PCs and people generate a fair bit of heat).

I assume this is the product you were considering?

Even though your apartment insulation isn't great, my first thought is to ask if you've considered a portable evaporative cooler. These are cheaper to run than a typical A/C and can drop the temperature up to 10°C under the right conditions. The main requirement is that you need to be able to provide air flow to allow fresh, relatively dry air into your room and the humid air out - otherwise the humidity builds up and the efficiency of the cooler steadily drops.

Where are you located in Australia?

Hi @dwefs and welcome! Welcome!

I have never thought of your application, but I love your ingenuity! Hurray! Thumbs up

Why not a bubble?

Check your ceiling height first! If it would fit, all you would have to do is figure out how to hook up the AC, and the bubble won't make you feel closed in.

I have been using one since 2017 to cover my 425-gallon raised pond during the winter. Here it is right after setting it up in November when we first got it.

i could flip it shiny side out no problem and the material is far stronger than expected.. i have a hard plastic mat under the chair but even if it rolled off i have little worry
the zippers are also very nice and large/durable and as you see the inside is like a black hole lol

now i just need my ac to arrive.. its been 40c here and i think this should work very well
i can only wonder what people walking by must think seeing this a big shiny box in the middle of my room XD

o and my cat loves the vent holes at the bottom
