A couple years ago I received a packet of seeds labeled "Red Speckled Fall Bean" in a seed swap. Have any of you heard of that one? I googled it and didn't find anything.

lots of old varieties that meet that name. Probably a cranberry or horticultural type. You can narrow your search if you know whether it is a pole or bush bean.

I don't know why I didn't think to post a picture with my inquiry post. I was hoping to find out if pole or bush. The bean in upper left is a little bit redder than the rest and a little bigger so wonder if it's different than the rest. Looks like I could be doing a mystery seed grow out Smiling My bet is a pole bean.

You are probably right. Most of the old antiques were pole beans. I have not seen anything like those in your photo. Closest Is the Amish Knuttle bean which is a white and red speckled bean of similar shape. Your beans however don't appear speckled just solid patches of red. Shape wise it appears to a cutshort type. Yin -Yand beans do have the same appearance as your beans, but would better be described as black and white

They made me think of the Yin-Yang bean, too.

There are a couple of varieties on this page https://www.abeancollectorswin... that look similar to yours, particularly the "Red Marbles" a little ways down the page.

I have a boughten pkg of Yin Yang that I opened up to compare. Ruled it out as it is alot darker. BUT I think it just might be 'Red Marbles'! The only difference I can see is that mine has some little specks and I can't see any on that Red Marbles. But maybe I just can't see the other side of the beans or the speckle doesn't show up. I'm so tempted to put in yet ANOTHER bean seed order! Wow does that site have the best bean selections ever! Thank you both so much for the help!!!

I think it's probably next to impossible to accurately identify a bean variety by the pattern on the seeds, there are so many that are similar. You might want to contact Russ Crow (the Bean Collector's Window guy) and ask him what he thinks; he might know if Red Marbles is also called Red Speckled, or maybe will have other information about Red Speckled. He is really a bean guru! Good luck, and have fun with the bean sleuthing Big Grin

I spent all afternoon browsing his site! Wow! You're right -- can't really identify the name of a red speckled bean by pattern! There's so many there I'd really love to grow, just have to narrow down my order. Sad I'm going to purchase 'Red Marbles' and grow them both out to compare just for the fun of it. Happy days!

I'm not sure how many people here will understand your excitement - but I kind of geek out on beans too Hilarious!

Oh, I too think the different colors and patterns of beans can be so beautiful, like all the different shapes and colors of squash.
