Hello everyone! I just wanted to introduce myself, & hopefully pick the brains of the superior minds here.
Forgive me if this is a bit lengthy, but I think some background might be helpful. My mom has always been the one with the green-thumb in our family, & some twenty years of renting my own place has passed between now & the last time I lived at home, & today I am a new home-owner here in Amarillo, & my passion for roses has not waned.
I am however a bit nervous of striking out, since Mamma was always the one that could root a tree from a dead stick, & I've never actually had to make the executive decisions about location, amount of fertilizer, etc. I feel childish saying so, but looking back, all I really had to do was occasionally water them, perhaps prune or train unruly shoots, & literally sit-back & smell the roses. Oh, how we only know how good we had it... Rolling my eyes.
So I've got a spot picked out, & a couple/few varieties narrowed down, (& questions about both,) but I'm not sure if I should post here or in the "Rose" section. Besides, I don't want to turn this post into a book anyway, so we'll just leave it at "Hello" for now Smiling I look forward to learning & sharing as I grow.
Cheers, Cotton

Check to see if there is a garden club or botanical garden in your area. If not check out small local nurseries ( not big box stores like Lowe's or Home depot). Sometimes they have lecturers on Saturdays that can help with info for your area.

Hi Cotton,
Congrats on coming a new home owner. Now, you can plant as many roses as you like. 😁
My mom and your mom have a lot in common. They could stick a rose cutting into the ground and it will root and grow. Like you, I have not acquired that talent.

Yes, definitely head to the rose forum for advice from many rose lovers.

The only thing about the rose forum is to remember that what variety does great in California or Michigan may not do as well in Amarillo. I've driven through there and you have a challenging climate. But they can help with soil prep, pruning, diseases etc. Another thing I thought of is checking for any Master Gardener program. They may have a spring garden tour where you can check out their gardens and most important talk to the volunteers and they will have a wealth of information.
