Hello! We are looking to replace a tree we lost a few summers ago. Our backyard isn't large, we have an old grown black locust that still stands and we keep because it provides dappled shade, it's tall, and it would be expensive to have removed. We are replacing an autumn blaze maple that split into three with a good summer storm and where we are hoping to bring in a new tree.

That said: I reached out to a nursery to see what they would recommend for our space. We have decided to go with something smaller in stature and canopy. We love fall colors of reds and oranges, however know that might not be some of the available options.

What we were given initially to look at from a list provided, these most appealed to me:

Korean Maple

Ivory Silk Lilac

Urban sunset maple

I'm zone 4A, has anyone this far north grown any of these? Do you enjoy them? Do you find there is a lot of maintenance? What would you recommend out of this bunch? Others the nursery recommended were: Mountain maple, Hawthorne, blue beech, fringe tree or pagoda dogwood. If one of those may be better … I'm of the camp of low maintenance both tree care but cleanup and I don't want one that has fruits, that I'll have fall leaves for the compost heap, that it will provide some shade to our house (again), a quick grower would be nice and visual interest would be great in the fall if we can. It would not be anchored by a bed at all, just the lawn but our garden boxes aren't too far away.

Thanks for the help!

So:

* hardy to zone 4a
* small to medium height at maturity (+/- 36ft)
* no noticeably large fruits
* low maintenance (doesn't apply really unless you choose the wrong one to begin with, see height)
* nice autumn color
* provides shade
* quick growing

I don't know alot out of the top of my head, especially considering hardiness. I'll give you a link to a Dutch tree grower which I somethimes use just to find species/varieties. Their site has alot of search option at the left of the page. Maybe you'll find something to your liking:

There are a lot of the Ivory Silk Lilac around us, what I have noticed if it does not get full sun the flowers can be very spotty.

Thank you all! I'll have to take a look this weekend! Appreciate the help. I know I'm limited by what the nurseries carry in the area - I'm in the boonies as it is with crazy sandy soil.

Thank You!
