It only has one flower to a stem. I just started with the fancy orange trumpet daffs by planting last fall. But I intend to get more for this fall.

I have a daff addiction. My dd has started to make fun of me when new ones come in to the homestead. *Blush* Can't seem to help myself!

Bev, I think you're thinking of Susan's pic above, it does indeed look to be 'Avalanche'. Daff's are easy to get hooked on, aren't they? I just can't get enough of them, both old stand by varieties and the modern lovelies- love 'em all!

Jmorth, lovely!

Rita, aren't those the most cheerful sight! Of the early orange cupped, I've got Jetfire and Itzim, and both just get better and better each year. I'll have to check out Maria, looks like the same kind of charmer.

Its not available at Scheepers were I got many of my bulbs but I did get it from Brent and Beckies. Its not the only orange trumpet I got but the first type to open. I never had any before and I do love the orange trumpets. Really the flowers are smallish, but just jump right out at you. In fact I like it so mmuch that I am going to get 50 more this fall and put them in a section of the backyard.

I envy you the space to put in so many! I end up with 10 of this and 10 of that. Already not enough space for the dogs out back. I suppose that they and I have struck a happy truce. I don't scream at them when they get into my gardens and they hunt happily through all those spaces. I keep telling myself that they had it first.

Sweet little Snowdrops! I would love to have hundreds of them scattered around, but they sure have gotten pricey over the last few years. I saw pics of large plantings of them with Winter Aconites, and would love to duplicate that some day.

They should naturalize for me Neil (I hope, I hope) and they should do well under my big trees although the ones I have are beside the patio. They are galanthus woronowii that have broader leaves so supposedly stay fresher longer. I'm hoping if they naturalize so I can trade some of them for more.

Thumb of 2011-04-10/jmorth/6b64b8Around 4 am was awakened by a woeful sounding hail storm, I figured doomsday had arrived (as far as the newly emerging plants go); however, the damage wasn't near as severe as my imagination registared (note foilage damage)
The hail was pretty good sized:Thumb of 2011-04-10/jmorth/813af5

Ain't spring grand! My back may be a little sore from pruning, racking, cleaning, hauling, ... but the crocus, iris, squill and others do add that bit of incentive as I walk back and forth.

Does anyone know how the real early bloomers get pollinated? I haven't noticed any insects and the snowdrops have been gone for a 10-12 days.

This bed I waited too long to rake!

Dahlianut, Midwestern springs are often very volatile, you just never know. The night it hailed the local weather caster, Guessin Gus reported counties well south of here could see storms but forcast nothing unusual for here.

Evan, I usually see bees buzzing around the first Crocus in bloom, which always kinda surprises me. Those Siberian Squills are such a vibrant blue, I'm planning on adding a bunch of those this fall.

Thanks jmorth. The bees and wasps and the goodguy beetles are awake here. The ladybugs are still sleeping though. Their cycle follows the aphids so I always watch them. The minute the ladybugs wake up if I water blast my trees and shrubs my aphid population decreases by at least a third Smiling
