Marie, that Tropaeolum is lovely, and something completely new to me. Had to look it up, I just love those unusual South American bulbs!

Sorry forgot to put the name. Ferraria crispa var. nortieri it is a South African bulb. They happen to be my favorites because they are dormant during our super hot summers!! That means I do not have to water them.Thumb of 2011-05-06/Desertdenial/ba8d5d

Wow, lots of great pics. I see lots of things I need now.

I didn't realize I was so far behind here, our daffs are just opening. And some of the tulips that should be late, are opening early. Going to be a strange year. Aren't they all?

Marie, I'm so loving your exotic bulbs that are new to me! Ferraria crispa var. nortieri is so unusual and cool! What is the actual size of that bloom?

Jmorth, wonderful shots! I'm surprised to see those Allium blooming already there too, is this when they typically bloom?

Polly, most things are a few weeks ahead here this year, and I've seen some odd reversals of bloom times too. I was shocked to feel bloom stalks developing in the LA Irises, it's typically around Memorial Day when I see that. I haven't even seen frost since March. Tender bulbs that I took chances with leaving them in the ground are sprouting now, and typically the ground isn't warm enough to wake them up till the end of May. I've noticed Cannas, Dahlias, and Callas (both aethopica and rehmannii types) emerging this week.

Bloom size is around the size of a 50 cent piece maybe a little bigger. It is fragrant too.

I checked out some records of past season allium bloom appearance: 5-8-08 : 5-18-09 : 4-19-10 : 4-29-11 - appears this year's manifestation is neither earliest or latest.

That's quite the range! Thanks for looking up your records. No wonder my combos of things I thought were in bloom at the same time so often surprise me!
