I didn't know there were any 'annual' Passiflora types, but I'm not all that familiar with the many varieties either. I wonder if some bloom on old growth and your winters are cold enough to kill what would produce blooms, but not enough to actually kill the plant. I've grown one or two, but I'm not sure of that either, so I'm just speculating. I think after 4-5 years they would be perennial plants rather than annual. Do the actual vines grow well for you? I currently have 'Lady Margaret' and am planning to overwinter it in the garage. Don't know how that will work.

The vines are 5 feet tall.
The nursery pot said annual, it's been through some terrible winters and still lived.

Yes, 4-5 years being outside year-round.
I'm just remembered the pot said annual purple passion vine.
It has to be a Perriannal.

What's wrong with them?

I'd speculate that the sellers call any that aren't reliably hardy "annuals".

I give mine lots of nutrients during the flowering period; nitrogen enhanced water once per week, and a heavy phosphorous blend a few days later...repeat and repeat...
My two vines are at least 16' long, and half as wide, with tons of buds and blooms. The buds only open after a good dose of water though.

Good point, chelle. That must be the explanation for 'annual Passifloras'.

Sigh, I have no luck at all overwintering passies. And I do love them! Beautiful photos, Joseph. I am soooo jealous!

Joseph - must add amethyst to my list. Are yours in ground or in pots?

My dark purple is sending out suckers! Yipes - so I've dug one - even the sucker is sending out a sucker. One that is still in ground is over 3 ft and have couple of buds.

Anybody interested in these?

I knew the P. caerulea and maypop will send up suckers everywhere, so I'm assuming that all passies will do that...which is a bummer since I don't want them everywhere.
So pots are the answer to containing them.

Incense and incarnata send out lots babies but I just pull or dig up to put elsewhere for more vines to put the caterpillars on, so the big vines don't get eaten down and there is always someone to share with
Make sure the pots have trays if you don't want them to multiply nodding Whistling Thumbs up
