zuzu, do you plan to buy any of those? I decided to skip Regan in favour of Palatine this year. Can't wait their updated list.

I don't plan to buy any, but the first three could change my mind. I love red roses with a contrasting reverse, so Cherries & Champagne is a rose I know I would like.

Cosmic Clouds' purple cup-shaped blooms with the silvery reverse remind me of Cardinal de Richelieu and could be an improvement over it in my garden. The Cardinal is a Gallica rose, so it needs more frost than my zone provides in winter to produce plentiful blooms. Besides, Cardinal de Richelieu is a once-bloomer and Cosmic Clouds is a reblooming shrub.

Desert Sky is intriguing because Regan says it's a combination of mauve and orange. That sounds like a russet rose and I'm crazy about russet roses.

zuzu, thank you for sharing your reasoning! I am also looking at first two roses, but have to be really cautious not creating in my small area винегрет. Smiling

I was also eyeballing those first two but told myself no. I have 3 or 4 roses still in pots to be planted this Spring. Pots are buried now for winter which will give me time to figure out a layout for stuff out there. Oh and figure out where to put Munstead Wood that's coming. Whistling Whistling

I have a dilemma I'd like to discuss: your approach to dealing with it. Imagine you want to buy a rose and know you can find it in a local Garden Center or Nursery. How do you decide where to make the purchase locally in pot or bare root?

I guess it would depend what time of year. However I have planted many roses at this time without problem Even when I bare root them myself.

When I read this question a couple of days ago, I wasn't sure what you are asking.
Better to buy a rose as potted or bare root, generally?
Buy now from local nursery that has the rose available potted now, or wait to buy it as a bare root during bare root season?
Local nursery will probably carry it potted next year, or better to buy it bare root from a higher quality bare root source?

I am sorry, I was not clear… I meant in general better buy in Spring : potted in local nurseries or mail order from anywhere.

Here's an example from my experience. I have a local nursery that sort of specializes in roses. Every year, the day after New Year's Day, they open their bare root selections. They have large 20 gallon bins filled with soil amendment, in which the loose bare roots are plunged. The staff pulls what you want, will trim them if you want, and wraps them in paper. The bare roots range from ~ $15-$24. In late March or early April, they open their large rose field, with the same bare roots that they pot up into 5 gallons. The potted roses are more in the $40-$50 range. I always choose the bare roots for financial reasons. There are certainly arguments for waiting for the potted roses too. I've bought plenty potted from them over the past 35 years, more when I was a newer rose grower!

The upside of ordering from Regan on Oct 31, or other great bare root vendors like Palatine (list up, order in Dec) or Witherspoon (when they eventually put up their list in Dec) is that you know you'll get the rose you want. You never can be completely sure what the local nursery will carry. I've sometimes rolled the dice with my local nursery, and come up short, and regretted not ordering from Regan.

I have never ordered from Reagan, I feel very tempted. I would also love to buy from Palatine this year. I have not been successful ordering from Palatine, because it is awful trying to get anything from them. Checking every day to just find they are having issues with their website or simply everything you wanted is sold out, because other people with more time made more efforts to chase a plant.

Now, I have a question for you guys, have you ever bought roses from Etsy vendors? I see this glorious looking japanese roses from 3 or 4 vendors in Etsy with good reviews but they are so expensive...like >$70 per plant. I am afraid of buying a dude.

On the other hand, are japanese roses good plants? I wonder if they are black spot magnets.

Did the vendors name the "Japanese Roses"?

Another. Takes a little digging, not sure if they're Japanese roses or just a gimmik.

A Reddit link to someone asking about them a few years ago. Seems Etsy is only place to easily find them right now.

Do not have a personal experience, but here is a good choice of roses:

im not sure which site, but a couple of folks on the Other forum have bought the Japanese roses and found them to be good growers thus far. There are many Etsy and Amazon sellers offering other roses also that are reputable.
