Here's an example from my experience. I have a local nursery that sort of specializes in roses. Every year, the day after New Year's Day, they open their bare root selections. They have large 20 gallon bins filled with soil amendment, in which the loose bare roots are plunged. The staff pulls what you want, will trim them if you want, and wraps them in paper. The bare roots range from ~ $15-$24. In late March or early April, they open their large rose field, with the same bare roots that they pot up into 5 gallons. The potted roses are more in the $40-$50 range. I always choose the bare roots for financial reasons. There are certainly arguments for waiting for the potted roses too. I've bought plenty potted from them over the past 35 years, more when I was a newer rose grower!
