Hi everyone, I have some questions about my new hostas my sister sent me for my b-day.
She got them on amazon so I don't know which ones they are. They were shipped inside baggies just the roots & tubers. They have all started to grow. What should I do with them. Put in pots with a soil mix good for hostas? I plan to keep them in my greenhouse for the winter. Should I water them? Fertilize them?
I am not new to plants but have never grown hostas before. Thanks for any advise you guys care to share with me.
I live sorta in the mountains about 30 miles east of Albuquerque. Zone 6b I believe. We get snow and freezing temptress. Not sure what other info you might need, just ask away. Shrug!
Happy Gardening :-)

Pot them up, they like soil with a lot of humus in it, I also mix in a some pea gravel. Hostas like moisture, I would not fertilize them at this time, come spring plant them out side in an area of dappled shade.

I'm sure others will provide good advice.

Only thing I would add is put them in a area of your greenhouse that does not get full sun.

If they came bare root from Amazon, I would be careful about having plants that are infected with virus. There is quite a high incidence of Hosta Virus X in such hostas. So, for now, I would keep them separate and pot each one. Be sure your hands are clean before going to another. And I would grow them in pots for at least a couple of years to ensure they are healthy. Meanwhile, research and learn about HVX and how to recognize it. And develop a habit of cleaning your tools with an antiseptic wipe between plants. http://www.hostalibrary.org/fi...
