Anyone know what kind of toad this is? It was in my yard in Idaho yesterday. It's about the size of my fist, which would help if I measured my fist! It buries itself in the dirt. I looked online, but they all start looking alike after a few pictures. I think it could be a bufo toad of some kind because of the stripe down its back. I have dogs, so I'm worried about it being in the yard. If it's poisonous, we'll transplant it somewhere. If it's not poisonous, it can live here as long as it wants since they are good predators. I'll even build it a house!
I just went out to see if I could find the toad, and it had climbed back into one of my seedling pots. The pot is 4" across, and the toad takes up most of the top of it. Hopefully the black hollyhock seedling survives!
That is what I thought too Margaret! I hope it ate a rattlesnake or two before Mark moved it to a new home!
It has been confirmed that it is a bufo toad, and it's been relocated because I have dogs. I'd still like to know which bufo toad it is. If anyone could help with that, I sure would appreciate it!
Thanks Jay! That is it! Thanks also for the great link. The photos are much better there than the other places I had looked. I suspected it was a Western Toad, but I couldn't find a good enough picture to be sure. Now I know, and will save that site. Great information and photos!
Sooo, how does a toad kill a dog? I did open one of the links, but my eyes are tired and I didn't immediately find the answer. Seems like an odd concern to me. I've never noticed any interaction between my dog and any toad/frog type creature... ????

Natalie, yes, but only if the dog mauls the toad and ingests the toxins in the skin, or that exuded because of pressure or fear. There should also be the similar problem in the US of dogs becoming addicted to mouthing them because of the hit. Terriers are especially likely to become addicts.
Deb, yes it is not usual that amphibians and dogs interact and poisoning by toads is not common. As well, dogs can be taught to leave them be. Here we have little choice because the introduced pest Cane Toad is ubiquitous.

You all haven't met my dog, Bailey. If it's round, it goes in her mouth. This toad is close enough to round, and my husband grabbed the toad, just before Bailey did. She spent an hour hunting for it after it was gone. Had two or three more show up, and she almost got those, too.

It is a bit cool tonight. It took a while to find one in the garden. This looks like a small, young male of about 4.5" snout-vent length.
