Thread OP

Any feedback will be appreciated. I have grown a lot of lily seed but I cannot recall any seed making first true leave in only 4 weeks from planting.
It is a wide cross between an Aurelian and L. rubellum so I've been keeping a closer eye on it than usual. So maybe other seed has put up true leaves in the same time frame but I can't remember. Does anyone track leaf emergence more carefully than I do and can comment?
Thanks,
Eric

The fastest one I've had is 'Golden Splendour' X leucanthum var. centifolium, which was about 6 weeks between the first cotyledons emerging and the first true leaves starting to appear. The seeds were directly sown into a pot.

Joshua, nice to see my cross is growing in Australia. I tip my hat to you.

Thanks Luka. It seems to be a vigourous cross. Looking forward to them flowering (hopefully first blooms in a couple of years).

Hi Eric, very occasionally I have seen IE seeds start to germinate in the pod when it has been left to dry outside on the plant and then got wet in late-summer rains. Any chance of something similar happening here? My guess is that germination was possibly underway before you planted the seeds, hence the rapid emergence?

I don't think that's possible. I froze the seed for two weeks prior to planting. Darm suggested this somewhere to improve germination success. So if they were already growing the freezing would have popped the cells. Prior to that they were in my house drying out for about 2-3 week.

Not sure if Darm's suggestion has any merit but he grows so many different species successfully that if he suggested I plant under the full moon wearing spandex I'd consider it good advice.

(Giggle) As long as the seed is dry, I'm sure freezing wouldn't hurt. I've never heard a benefit for trumpets, but many others, especially finnicky ones, and wide crosses like that I would include. Darm has helped me with successfully germination of difficult DE species that included freezing.
