This is the third category I've made for my cactus (and succulent) collection. These plants need temperatures above 50F for best growth. I bought a large LED fixture to grow these plants. I took a photo of the setup on Nov 18, 2022. I took a 4'x4' sheet of plywood I bought as a damaged 4x8 sheet for really cheap and sealed the surfaces with spray paint. I then took some 3/4" copper tubing I had laying around and made a frame to support the LED light. I made it so all of the fittings have a slip fit. Nothing is soldered. It can be broken down in the spring and stored. I also have guy wires providing stability for the supporting frame so it does not wobble too much when I hit it with my head when trying to water or look at the plants.

Those Leuchtenbergias are pretty far along, it looks like. Have they flowered?

I recognize names from some plants I have. Your selection is pretty eclectic. Our winter minimum is about 46F, so my succulents spend the whole year outside here. I like the custom setup you made, it looks very practical.

I usually think of F. pilosus as a large plant (at least compared to the others), but all 3 barrel cacti have the potential to fill big pots. My F. latispinus plants flower pretty young (6-8" size) and make edible fruit. I love that group and hope to put a bunch of Ferocactus plants in the ground here.

My Leuchtenbergia have flowered, but not consistently. I just checked my photo history and I have photos back to June 2009. One at least flowered last year on Aug 28, 2023, I seem to think I remember getting a flower before, but if I did, I didn't take a photo. So, that is hardly consistently.:

So, it remains to be seen if it will flower this August.

The Ferocactus latispinus flowered way back in 2010 while it was being kept at work in a heated room. It flowered on Nov 29, 2010. Now, I have seen flower buds show up in the fall, but I've not seen them bloom. I don't know what I did back in 2010, but I have not been able to see a bloom since. It blooms in late Fall for me and the plant is inside by that time. The quality of this photo might be pretty poor. I extracted it from a group shot. It was not taken with a high quality camera either-just a point and shoot.:

Back to the F. latispinus: maybe I should keep watering it in the fall to keep it growing. I have been stopping all water once I bring them indoors before frost in early October.

Back to the Leuchtenbergia: The tubercles do not stay green but turn red at the tips and die back. I'm thinking I need to water the plant more. And as far as the size, here they are bare root on April 3, 2021:

Really big roots on those plants, also a chunky stem. My larger plant lost its roots completely, shortly after arrival (I suspect the process started before I got it) and went pretty thoroughly red all over. I have been patiently waiting and I think it sprouted new roots. Now it is firmly seated in the soil. Still quite red but I think over the worst of it.
