Good day everyone
I just moved to Long Island NY and would like to find a heat tolerant (south facing home) flowering vine which will look decent in the winter for my portico. Everything i seem to come across looks like it may wither away in the winter. Ive looked at the American Wisteria and Clematis bit i fear the vines of the Wisteria may be too strong for my pillars and the Clematis looks like it doesn't look very nice during the frost but i could be wrong. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I think I'm in zone 7b/8a

I don't think Wisteria or Clematis are evergreen in NY, but either should grow back each spring. There are different types of Clematis, so check that before you buy to make sure it's the kind you wanted to have. Some never need pruning, some should be pruned annually.

Don't think Gina's lovely suggestions are hardy up there at all.

Annual vines give you the peace of mind of knowing they can't take over and tear up your support, or ruin your house. Morning glories, moonflower, hyacinth bean vine, Rex Begonia vine, sweet potato, Mandevilla, are all great vines to use as annuals. If you don't want re-seeding, don't get Grandpa Ott morning glories. I've never had any volunteers from other kinds, when grown where they are not hardy.
The golden rule: Do to others only that which you would have done to you.

Carolina Jessamine might be hardy, especially on the south side. Evergreen to boot.
