All but the new leaves are being eaten down to the main vein of the leaf. These are the mature leaves. It must not be a small insect

No deer. ... I have looked again.. More leaves gone, but only the old leaves, whatever this is does not eat the new foliage. I can't find anything on or around the plant itself.. Grasshopper?
