Can roses be planted in containers? My zone is 5.

Yes, roses can be planted in containers, however in as severe a climate as the typical Zone 5, you're likely to have to bring them into an unheated garage or other building to protect them over winter. I'm sure there are others on this forum who can provide you with detailed information how to successfully achieve that. You probably wish to consider using light weight containers and selecting smaller growers to reduce the labor involved in accomplishing it. Good luck!

If you can bury the pot in the ground that would be the best way to overwinter them in a pot but otherwise what was said above.
