Milano,
I grew some lotus from seed last year. Each seed produced about 5-6 small tubers - 1/3 " diameter. I carefully removed them from the pots last Oct., cleaned them up and packed them in jars full of water and placed them in the refrigerator till about a week ago. I unpacked and separated them, warmed them up and began to see new growth. I have planted them in individual small tubs and they seem to be doing well.

Just an experiment but looks like a neat way to winter the tubers.

I let my lotus get almost dry again this year as I want to move it. There are 5 or 6 tubers connected like sausages. I don't know if I should separate them or leave them in a string? They are about a half inch wide and 3 or 4 inches long each one.

Welcome Hendrik.

I am not familiar with lotus, so I will defer to the others on this thread.

From what I gather you should separate the tubers being sure to have at least two growing eyes per tuber, if there is only one eye on a tuber leave it with another so that unit has two eyes.
I'm still learning.

Milano - Welcome to ATP!

This is one of my favorite online website for information about growing lotus and waterlilies:

http://www.victoria-adventure....

If you click on "Index to Cultivation and Other Articles", you will find a wealth of information!

This is a really good YouTube video explaining dividing lotus tubers and replanting them:

Hopefully this will be helpful to those interested.

Perfect video Becky! Thank you! I had used Victoria gardens website for the info when I planted my lotus seeds a year (maybe 2) ago. It's a great site, with wonderful information. However, that video you posted is exactly what I needed. My lotus tubers look identical to the ones in the video and now I know what to do.

I separated and planted my lotus tubers yesterday using the video from Becky as a guide. In order to get 2 growing tips per bunch I only split it into 2 pots. I planted them in my roof pond which is in full sun all year and I hope will be much better for them than where they were downstairs.

Here's what was in the pot after rinsing the dirt away.
Thumb of 2014-02-16/extranjera/46256a

Divided in two and planted in some good jungle soil with 4 plant tabs per bucket.
Thumb of 2014-02-16/extranjera/33a295

One bucket at either end of the pond, the water got pretty dirty even though I put some sand on top of the soil to keep it down.

I let it settle overnight and it is much clearer today but I didn't have time to clean the filter. I'll do that tomorrow and it should be all clear again. One of the growing tips has already sent a shoot towards the surface Hurray!

I am curious - do we know why there has to be 2 growing points as opposed to 1? I have never grown lotus, so I am really unfamiliar with them.

I guess it gives you twice the chance of the tuber surviving? Other than that, I have no idea. I can see several leaves coming up on one of the pots today and one shoot on the other pot.

I think the idea of two growing tips is just for insurance, from what I can gather.

Jonna, you made a good haul. We are months behind you but spring is a comin!

Jonna - I wondered. It makes sense. With Waterlilies, I just leave one growing point - but I ended up with so many wl's it would not have been a problem if any of the starts didn't work.
