Are lotus heavy feeders? I know the waterlilies are?

Carolyn - Yes! Lotus for me are actually heavier feeders than Waterlilies. I can add a pond tab to a waterlily and go more than a month without feeding them again without seeing too drastic of a change. But with Lotus, the aerial pads will start to turn brown and the plant will decline as if going into dormancy. I've learned through trial and error that they need monthly fertilizing throughout the warm months to continue to show their beautiful growth and to bloom.
What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters, compared to what lies within us.

I appreciate the tip too, Becky. I would love to give them a try. Have you looked at the year long fertilizer spikes? I use them for my waterlilies.

Congratulation for your seeds I tip my hat to you. :)
What types of lotus seeds did you germinate? N nucifera or lutea?
How long it needs to growing the first leaves?
I have my roseum plenum seeds and germinating it and now almost the fourth day but doesnt showing up any signs the leaves will appear.
I change the water twice a day with warm water and put it on full sunlight 6 hours more everyday.
Its only swell up

Any advice?? Thanx before Smiling

Thanks Hendrik.
The first seeds I germinated are nucifera. The second seeds might be lutea, but I'm not sure. The seeds where much smaller and rounder than the nucifera seeds. Since mine are indoors its taken about a month for the first leaf partially open, though each seedling has 4 floating leaves and the beginnings of their first runners.

You're welcome Hendrik. I think mine only took a long time because its indoors and the water isnt warm. In your climate it probably takes much less time.

I do not grow lotus, but I think I saw one during my Manila trip recently ..thought to share the photo here and the way it is growing, and I do not know its name either, just loved to see how it grows happily in the pond. Smiling
Behind me is the pond, the lotus in the mid back part: 2nd photo just the extension of the pond

But today i saw my seeds it have cracked in the middle part until under side , hopefully green come soon :)

Tarev
Its beautiful pond surely *Blush*
But i want to correct it
It isn't a lotus but its a tropical water lily
Because lotus leaves are not variagated and not all of the leaves float on the water some of them are stand above the water line. I tip my hat to you.

Thanks Cameron! I wish it is my pond! I can only pose beside it..the tall plants in the first photo reminds me of birds of paradise and I do remember seeing a lot more of them all over the place, so maybe it is some of them in the pond.

I wish I had a pond like that too. It looks so peaceful out there. The tall plants do remind me of bird of paradise. I didn't notice the pretty bamboo in the first picture.

Hendrik
I'll have some pond container projects once it warms up lol. I think I'm going to get some 20 gal. containers from Lowes and put two lotus seedlings in each one. I'll probably have to repot them next year but I don't have room for 8 lotus containers lol. I'll have to find homes for the last 4.

Beautiful pond Tarev.

Cameron - I like your idea with the containers. I could do something like that in my back yard. I would to overwinter the lotus inside during the winter. Not sure how that would go - although with the winter we have been getting this year, I would not be shocked if I lost a number of plants as it is.

Carolyn the 20 gal. containers I saw at Lowes were either navy blue or black and a lighter blue and they were $7.98. They also have rope handles on them. I have some spray paint that looks like green marble that I might use just to make them look a little more decorative Thumbs up I have plenty of clay soil and I also bought a bag of coarse sand last year that I use for potting mix. In Winter I could always put them in the shed, though I'd probably have room for only one container lol.
This Winter has definitely been rough. All of my garden plants that sprouted on Saturday are mush as of today. I hate to even know how many didn't make it, but I'll stay optimistic Smiling Here are some updated pics of my lotuses.

N. nucifera first leaf. I'm not sure why the edge is discolored?

Ive got some nice pictures but not the sense to show them!

Thanks,
