So, I was at the Rosarium at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden in NYC on Sunday. I took quite a few photos hoping to add to the data base here. But when I got on here, it turned out that half of them don't seem to exist in this data base. They were clearly marked with fancy permanent signs. What's going on? Here are some of the roses that don't seem to exist.

Ultra Violet Simplicity

Survivor

Setons

John Hopper

Earl of Duffern

Surf Rider

Cubans

Also some random roses that weren't labeled

Anyway, if anyone has any information about any of these, I would be very interested to know what was going on…thanks!

Lovely photos, Zoia. When Sue and I created the rose database in Cubits, we never aimed to list every rose that ever existed. We started with a list of almost 3000 popular roses and then added the roses our members owned that weren't on the list.

After our database moved to AllThingsPlants and Garden.org, we adhered to much the same rules -- adding the roses our members own, adding roses for which our members have photos, and adding roses from the lists of nurseries' new offerings. We have avoided adding roses that are not available in commerce unless they are important links in a parentage chain.

I'll be happy to create entries for most of the roses you've photographed and will return to this post with links to the entries. Setons and Cubans, however, might have other names. I can't find them listed anywhere.

Do you think "Cubans" might be Cubana? We have two entries for roses named Cubana in our database and HMF has three.

Do you think "Setons" might be Setina? It's on the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's list of roses and we have an entry for it in our database.
Rose (Rosa 'Setina')

Here are the new entries for your photos:
Rose (Rosa 'Surf Rider')
Rose (Rosa 'Earl of Duffern')
Rose (Rosa 'John Hopper')
Rose (Rosa 'Survivor')
Rose (Rosa 'Ultra Violet Simplicity')

I bet it's Cubana correctly. It looks just like the first entry on that list.I bet spellcheck pulled a fast one on both my titles as I entered them... I think Setina is probably correct as well. Especially since it's in the data base at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Thank you!
