That Twizzler brug is beautiful!!! What criteria do those of you who hybridize use when you decide to register a brug you've hybridizied?

Thanks, I love Twizzlers too! I think the criteria most hybridizers are using are pest and disease resistance, heat tolerance, the ability of the blooms to stay double, triple, single i.e. the same color, shape etc. For example some doubles will convert to singles or visa versa over time. Fragrance is good. The plant should root well so it can be propagated. If the plant is a variegate, one would make sure that the trait would carry on in the cuttings. Most test them for 2 years, some insist on longer.

Thanks Lenette, those are things I hadn't even thought of. I hybridize daylilies and of course they perform differently from brugs. We do test them for three or more years. Some want 5 years of testing. I like 2 to 3 depending on the plant.
So it isn't how lovely the bloom but rather how solid it's performance? I didn't realize the doubles could revert to singles. Does this ever happen with registered plants?

New here, invited by Lenette, thanks! Will do my best to contribute to this post, LOL! Hi Elizabeth and Barb!

The only brug currently flowering in my garden is Mountain Magic. It is a small plant about two feet tall, but it never fails to bloom. A wonderful friend from Texas gave me a couple of cuttings last year, and the one cutting planted in the ground, flowered twice; here it is again flowering in February. The bloom has not color up as it did last year, most likely due to the weather. Eloise

Eloise where do you live that your brug is blooming in the ground right now? I'm hoping to give that a try next fall and see what can survive here in Tn in the ground with protection of course.

Hi Molly, I live in southern California. Although we have had colder temperatures than in the past (hasn't everyone!), MM decided to bloom even though some nights got down to the 30s and 40s! I know, lots of you are probably laughing and would say those temps are spring-like to you, but for us, it is super cold, LOL! Speaking for myself, I am a wimp when it comes to cold.

Eloise right now I would love to have your temps LOL I moved to Tn from the Fingerlakes region in upstate NY and was told how short and warm winter would be here in Tn. I'll tell you they lied LOL. Actually I'm told we're having an abnormally long and cold winter this year. One for the history books.
I'm going to try growing brugs in the ground but I will certainly take cuttings as back ups. I was just on a BGI page and saw an interesting way to root a large number of cuttings using a rolled up clear garbage bag and spaghmum moss. I could root many cuttings this way in a smaller space than otherwise.
I was also doing a little research and learned that brugs come from SA with some coming from the Andes Mountains. I'm thinking the species from those locations should in theory be tougher than the ones on low lying tropical areas. So following this logic I want to try my hand at B.aurea and B. arborea if I can locate any.

Molly, I mostly have noids in the ground because I didn't know if the gophers (darn rats!) would eat up the roots as they have my fig, banana, roses, etc. Seems like they haven't bothered the noid brugs so am more confident in growing some of my named brugs in the ground this year.

Very pretty Elizabeth, Elizabeth! I'd love to find plants with my grandkids' names, but it's hard or I don't like the plants, LOL! You mean you had problems posting pictures at the other site (can we mention it)? It is easy once you do it the first time. I need to inventory my rooted brug cuttings to see what I need to order from Eddie.

Oh Lenette, also been meaning to comment on your seedlings. That is such a beauty, and I hope it continues blooming like that so you can register it and give it a great name!

Gordon here is the one who got me started on brugs a few years ago.... with just a few seeds, then Becky sent me a few more seeds, and I was hooked! LOL!

I wanted to get over here and at least join the forum for now, will get back over here soon to catch up on all the threads!
