LOL. Goes to show that what works in one area may not work in another. I tried Miracle Grow's Moisture Control potting mix and found it remained wet too long and that lead to root rot. Brugs need lots of water, but the roots themselves are susceptible to root rot if they lack oxygen. So I went back to the regular Miracle Grow potting mix and decided to follow the recommendation to add perlite to improve aeration. I need to water more often, but if I can avoid root rot, I'm happy.

Layering materials of different densities inside a pot slows down the movement of water through it thus slowing down draining and increasing the chances of root rot.

I also use Miracle Grow Moisture Control but add additional coir and some hydrating crystal. I didn't have to water as much.

Good morning everyone on this very special day. Group hug Hurray! Have a great day. BTW, I think a light bulb turned on in my head. My brug has been in the same potting soil for 4 years. I am going to repot it this week. Bad me. That's what happens when life is in a difficult time. Some things get missed. This is going to be a good year for my little brug. Thumbs up

Wait until the 25 of Feb to transplant. It will be in the Flower sign. Mayybe it will bloom fabulously. I read some of the folks put those moisture crystals in the soil when they plant the brugs to keep from having to water too much. You may think about doing that too, Lynn. i want you to have a Wonderful Brug year.

I am thinking about buying some brug cuttings off of ebay because I did not take cuttings from mine in the fall. Who knew the winter was gonna be this terrible and I have NEVER had any luck with cuttings. So I need your experience here. What is the best way to start a cutting? Some have told me just putting it in water tried that and mine rotted. Just stick it in a pot of dirt someone else told me well no luck with that route. So I guess I need a dummys for brug cuttings guide. Since neither time was I successful. So here I go again please tell me the most reliable way I am more than willing to learn. I live in Jacksonville FL and I show one of my brugs is coming back but I want to try some new ones and maybe some double ones. Thanks any info suggestions would be helpful.

No I did not. I was told to put them in water and roots will start. Peroxide is for bacteria growth? Just guessing. thanks

It works, and you don't have to clean out the water so much either, I got brugs been in water since last fall.

When do you know when to plant them and do you plant them right outside into the ground or into a pot and what type of soil. Really once I get them in the ground I have no problem and I can even grow them from seed in my mom aero garden but seed is unreliable as to what you will get interesting but unreliable. I would like to get some named cuttings of ones that I really like and then be able to take cuttings each fall as the insurance program against freezes here. Thanks for any and all help anyone can give.

PJ,
What kind of soil do you have? If it has lots of humus drains well, you should have no problems planting them directly in the ground, but if the soil is less than ideal, planting the rooted cuttings in small pots in potting soil gives the cutting a chance to establish a larger root system quickly before it has to go in the ground.

Amend a large area where the Brug will be planted rather than just the hole or you will get the bathtub effect. If there is a difference between soil types, water takes longer to penetrate from one soil to another. Standing in water for too long without access to oxygen, can lead to root rot. Strange since they can be started in water, but it happens all too often.

Peroxide added to the rooting water not only keeps the water fresher for a longer period, it also provides more oxygen to the cutting.

Last year, I experimented with a tiny bit of rooting gel I had. I added a very small amount to the rooting water. It didn't seem to have the same effect on all the cuttings I was rooting, but I was astonished at the rate some of the cuttings rooted.

Rooting brugs can be difficult, some make it, some don't no matter what you do! I had more than 80 cuttings from my brugs this past fall, and I only have about 10 make it. Most of them got mushy. I had some in peroxide water, and I had some in water with moss around the roots. So far, most of mine that made it are in the peroxide water. This in only my second year growing brugs, and like everyone else, I think they are beautiful. So far, I have not met a brug I don't want to bring home! When I made the raised bed last year, I placed the water sorb crystals in the hle, then I placed the plants on that! I also placed a soaker hose through the garden, and that seemed to help so much, since we had such hot temps for last summer!
Good luck to everyone growing brugs this year. Make sure you post pictures!

Linda,
I was wandering through some website looking for information on fasciation and ran across more rooting information on Brug cuttings in water. As long as the water is warm, the cuttings will root. Cold water only encourages rot. So the aim in rooting back-up cuttings is to keep the water warm. Don't know how warm. The article didn't say. Will need to experiment!

I agree, It doesnt get really cold here, so my cuttings I just put in the window sill facing full sun and I was able to root them in the winter. They got long roots in about 14 days!

I wonder if maybe you could put them in glass jars and set those on a heating mat on low...it that would help?

I didn't add that the suggestion in the website was to put one or two folded towels between the heating pad and the container. The other alternative would be to use a heating pad with a thermostat set low. Too warm and you drive the oxygen out of the water. That's bad.
