We are looking at Icy conditions this week. They can't decide if we are getting sleet or freezing rain so they call it a 'mix'. This is a good word to remember if you forget what flowers you have just say, it's a mix! LOL.

Good one, Susan!

We only got an inch and the wind is blowing it away. Streets and driveway are clear.

I can't recall the last time we were over freezing. I hope that means a nice warm spring.

We are not expected to get above freezing until next Monday (predicting 34 for the high) but they are also calling for snow an ice that day. Lets hope the forecast changes by then.

We have had zero melt! We just keep piling up the snow higher and higher.

Oh boy there is going to be serious flooding when all this melts

Jennifer,I agree. We are the same with constant temps in the single digits day and night.Snow just piles up.
I do laps around the house inside just to keep my metabolism going.
No flood worries here,we are on a slope but the homes on the river will be in bad shape.

No flooding at my house, we live on slope also. But across the street from us the houses back up on to the Clinton River drain. I bet that drain will see record high levels.

I tried to get my metabolism back by walking on a tread mill. But I got this horrific cold that I cannot shake, and its been 10 days!

WORST WINTER EVER Thumbs down

We even had some snow here in the PNW, a few miles from Puget Sound. It's already lasted more than 24 hours!

Finally we've had a week below freezing, if it counts that the days LOW temperature went below freezing.

There were some weeks like that earlier in the winter, but then I had a month or 6 weeks with little or no frost.

About the time I was starting to think "I could have put out some seedlings if it was going to STAY like this until spring" we had 4-5 nights of frost and a few nights below 25.

Then snow.

OK, you-all would call it a dusting, but for me it's a shock to see white out there after worrying more about weeds coming up than about frost. And one little Bok Choy had decided to sprout since it thoguht that Spring had come three months early this year. Now he's a puddle of mush. Sad

It's probably not this warm farther inland. I'm just 2 miles from the Sound.

I'm thinking that I should test and learn about cold frames or poly tunnels by stretching some crop into late fall. Then if I cook them or freeze them, I won't have lost a whole season for that bed.

But if i felt like I knew what I was doing with "cover", I might start a few cold-hardy things in February or January, and hope to nurse them through several cold snaps and multiple frosts. However, I procrastinate too many things to trust that I would be consistent about covering them every night when cold was predicted, and uncovering EVERY morning before work when the sun might come out fully.

Rick, if you use the floating row covers that protect from frost, you don't remove in the morning. Just leave it on the entire time. Might be worth a shot. Do you have small beds? I have yards and yards and possibly some smaller pieces you could have if you want to try it before you buy. Mine is about 67" wide. It is mid weight Agro Ribbon. You can let it lie right on top of the crops or hoop it. I usually hoop it, just because I have a mental block against just letting it lie loosely.

I am not that motivated and I already have a thousand things to do before work. LOL. I might direct sow in spring but indirectly or 'indirect sow'. (I made that up:) Plus you do not have to harden them off. By indirect sow I mean plant them out but not in the ground, put them in pots so if you have a late unexpected freeze I can just bring them inside the garage for that one night, or cover them, then continue the process.

Here is a list of seeds that are good for direct sowing.
