I don't see much rebloom, but old, reliable Little Winecup always reblooms. Rosy Returns is sending up a scape now, but didn't bloom earlier in the summer, so it isn't rebloom!

Although we are classed as zone 8a that is entirely due to (generally) mild winters, we get very little sunshine--our climate consists mainly of rain, strong wind and cloudy skies 😞

I need some sun, I'm starting to look like a vampire! Smiling

Does that mean you live near the moors with lots of heather and heath? If so, I'm under the impression that you have a lot of very unique natural beauty nearby.

We are in West Yorkshire which is more industrial but luckily we are on the edge so close to countryside but not as close as I would like. The Moors are further North but not too far.

Perhaps a mini-garden based on themes from the Moors would work better than trying to make daylilies happy. Does anyone do that?

@csandt--

Hi Carol,
I am sure that there are people doing that but it would be very limited--the moors are EXTREMELY bleak and all that will grow there are heathers, coarse grasses and bracken. It is mainly uninhabited except for hill sheep, rabbits and the odd hill farm and large parts are inaccessible by road.

I wouldn't say that daylilies are UNHAPPY here any more than any other plants, many of them grow very well indeed but we can't expect to get the same colours and patterns here as in areas with more sunshine. I suspect, however, that that would be the same with any plants grown here--they would most likely look very different grown in different parts of the world with different climates.

Also there are more hybridisers in Europe now so with the import ban I guess we will be seeing more European hybridised daylilies, especially judging by the seed crosses that I see some of them are buying on LA. There are already varieties available that have been grown/bred entirely in Europe which are growing very happily in our climates Smiling

@Scatterbrain,
It will be interesting to see what the European hybridisers produce.

@Hazelcrestmikeb

Hi Mike,

I am from Barnsley, South Yorks originally and my paternal grandparents were both from Wath (which is very near Barnsley) and were married and are buried in the churchyard there. My mother's family were from Hoyland Common. Barnsley but most of my family have died now I'm afraid.

I did leave Yorkshire for a long while though before moving back here.

@csandt

Carol-- if you're interested look up the Boitzer taglilien site, Gerald Holts' own daylies are on there under page B (for Boitzer--those are all Geralds intros).

There are others of course but I would need to look out the website addresses for the others--I know about Gerald's as I have ordered from him this year thanks to Mayo.

He has a new one coming out soon called Boitzer Papillon which looks nice but I can't afford it yet.

Just these two? That's about $41 each, pretty expensive. Is that a typical price or are these expensive because of their fairly recent (2012) registration date?

@csandt,

Hi Carol,

Sorry, I am not sure how to do links on kindle--if you google/search

www.boitzer-taglilien.de

and go onto the page called something like "own intros" there is a page full of all his own varieties.

He has the spiders/UFs at the top and round forms further down.

Looking at the price list he sent me this year his own intros vary from €10- to around €40- not sure what that would equate to in USD without looking at currency converters.

Prices generally appear to be much cheaper in the US than in Europe though (for everything, not just daylilies) so that is something to bear in mind.

Plus it is very expensive for European hybridisers to buy the original daylilies from the US to breed from to begin with because of all the certificates and import taxes.

Import taxes on American goods are high here, if I buy anything from the US I have to add aprox 35-40% onto the price to cover taxes and transport costs.

Here in Britain, a daylily that may have been in the US for 15-20 years will be advertised as 'new' to a sellers catalogue and can still be around £40- Just because they are so expensive to import and then trial for several years.😞

Hope that helps. Smiling

@Scatterbrain, thanks for that Yorkshire tidbit. Very expensive indeed. Buying and starting seeds is definitely the way to go at those prices on my humble opinion.

Hello, everyone! I'm new to this group and have immersed myself in the wealth of knowledge you have provided this novice. My real name is Karen, but that was taken. KaMae8 will do just fine though. I live in a region 4b, WI, and needless to say, I likely won't get many rebloomers. There are SO MANY beautiful DLs to choose from, it's a bit overwhelming. LOL I welcome any advice, known grower or cultivars that might do well here. I have started a journal to keep all the great tidbits from here to have at hand from Kathy Rinke, Betty, and Maurice. Thanks again and happy gardening in 2021 Hurray!

Welcome! I hadn't read this forum until you resurrected it, so thanks. I just started using alfalfa pellets this past fall.

I'm afraid the pellets would cause a rabbit and squirrel riot, so I've been digging all the new ones in with alfalfa meal and lobster compost.

Yearly I sprinkle alfalfa pellets on my daylilies before it rains, they just fall apart not causing a rabbit or squirrel problem at all as they are no longer in pellet form.

I would like to try that, because I can't use the powder successfully on the established, mulched Daylilies...
