I just found some Bleeding Heart seedlings by my Gold Heart. Some of them are gold too! I hope some of them get their bloom color from 'Valentine.' It would be awesome to have a red form of Gold Heart!

I think I found mine emerging today. Of course, as usual, I'm not certain. The label had blown to 15 feet away.

I was hoping I had a photo of both the cultivated bleeding heart and my native Dicentra formosa, but I can't locate one. I'll try to catch them together this year, I love the contrast, and the little native will often colonize wherever my cultivated ones are located. Here's a pic of D. spectabilis (cultivar unknown).

Here's my little native, D. formosa, which colonizes readily but is not any sort of problem. It grows all over in our back woods and when moving loam, I always get some of this. It will grow where the conditions are right for it, fill the beds with soft foliage and little flowers in early spring, and when the bulk of my perennials come on, I just pull the formosa. It always comes back.

This one grows in a very tight spot between the front steps and a rock wall. It must like the spot as it has been there a very long time.

I adore Bleeding Hearts and have for years. One of my favorite plants, but I've never had any luck in keeping them alive. Imagine my surprise last year when I saw one blooming at the edge of the property! I don't know how long he's been there, if he was planted or if he's wild, but I sure was happy. If I'm right, it looks like the plant is back again this year and I cannot wait for the flowers! This year I'll get pictures
allons-y!

My bleeding hearts are putting out blooms, but they're very small. Could this be because we've had chilly night time temps? Here's my gold one, but I didn't get a close up of the blooms.

That is really pretty, I am getting a start of one at a plant swap in May can't wait to see how it looks once it grows a bit.

'Gold Heart' is probably my favorite because the foliage stands out so much. It looks awesome with some Heuchera!

Aack. My neighbor puppy absolutely flattened one of my bleeding hearts. I was doing a 'garden walk' and noticed something definitely missing, on closer inspection she (maybe) laid on it or some such thing. Anyway, nothing this year. I will be hopeful for next season. She's a pup...
