I really like your Lavender colored bleeding heart. I'll have to check and see if it's for my zone. And, thank you Holly. It's been a really good grower. I got it as a liner 4 years ago, and it's really big now. I need to divide it up, but probably won't happen this year!

Not mine, a division from Mom's 10-15 year old at her new home. Should have taken pics before when the creeping phlox was showing better. It's a nice early show. Obvious where I got in the to drop a canna, huh? Sticking tongue out

Pretty boring little bed originally nothing but matching hostas and the phlox. The "Chicago Apache" daylily/ canna combo is a major improvement. Added a few volunteer heliopsis "Tuscan Sun" to see how they do. I'll likely stuff a handful of annuals in to keep some bloom through the season.

Thanks Pirl!

Karen,
Mine are just starting to show off. I've had some really small blooms for a while, but today they looked pretty good!

We haven't had a whole lot of warm weather yet. I'm hoping it improves with time.

My best bleeding heart is a common variety volunteer. Where it self-sowed from... I haven't a clue. It's been in its present location for a few years now. I wanted to move it, but, until last summer when we started some renovation work on our old house, the plant had been growing between cracks in a couple of concrete slabs. Now, at 3 feet tall, it's just more than I want to tackle. The rock retaining wall behind it is on its West side, so it is sheltered from prevailing winds. It has Eastern and Southern exposures. I wish my other bleeding hearts did half as well.
(Sorry I didn't take the time to clean up the photos. Construction work still ongoing.)

Kat2014 I love your plant, it's so big! I didn't know they would get that big.

I'm really hoping for some full blooms here soon, so I can get pictures!

I know this is an old thread, but I need a bit of advice for my bleeding heart. I'm so new to all of this that I tend to freak out a bit, sort of like a brand new mom!

So I planted one last spring up against the foundation of my condo. The particular spot tends to exude a bit of warmth during the winter and is the first to thaw out, that is, right about now! So, having a bit of spring fever, I went to check out my small patch of garden area and found the bleeding heart to be totally uncovered (I hadn't mulched it before winter but I did cut it back) and surprise of surprises, this is what I found:

Now I'm not sure, but isn't it a bit early for this type of growth? I'm in North-central Massachusetts, zone 5b, and it's only the end of February!

But my big question is, should I cover the new growth with something to protect it from any possible weather that might happen over the next couple of months? I'm thinking more snow, frost, sudden freeze, etc.

Thanks for any help / advice. Will be greatly appreciated!
You don't kick walls down, you pull the nails out and let them fall.

My oldest blleding heart is 16 years old. It is a monster that gets to be about 40" tall x 50" wide. I have an alba that is a much more diminutive plant. It is so beautiful that I added 3 more last summer. I have some of the newer varieties some of which have not done well for me. Last year I planted some of the really red varieties,I hope they all make it through this winter with so much mild weather. The snow cover here vanished last week.

Here is a picture of my NOID Bleeding Heart that is in my Hosta Bed on the North side of our house. It must like it here cause it comes back every year and gets really big but it does take a beating from the wind. I will post an updated picture of it this summer. This picture was taken in 2015.
