I'll sing the praises of Mary's Gold too. It's a beauty.

Panama Hattie has always been a bright one in my garden.

Thanks for this post. Now I have MORE new cultivars on my wish list!

Two oldies but goodies not mentioned that shine in the garden are
Golden Prize - won the Lenington Award, so it will do well in most any climate
and Bill Norris - won Stout.

There are two other plants that I recall seeing from a distance and had to have!

Kind of off subject here, yet very appropriate for this thread: Can some of the more experienced daylily people look at Lillyaddict's NOID red and tell us how you would look it up in the data base.
Being all we have to go by is the bloom I tried Red with green throat, Red with dark water mark, etc. but I brought up nothing. I have often wondered how the best way is to pull up photos of unknown daylilies. Any help or suggestions on how to describe a daylily bloom and pull it up in the data base?

maxxtenn,
I have seen a couple of comments on the fact that some of the recommendations are old style blooms, or older plants: That is all I have, look forward to some of the newer ones, but for now tried and true is good enough for me. I am glad you posted this recommendation it looks a lot like a NOID in my garden now. I need to check it out further, sounds like something I would have picked up along the way.
Golden Prize:

'Bill Norris'

Like the word "Brilliant" used in the description, it also had some good comments on it.

Prince of Purple:

There is a huge variation in the color of the photos in the data base, no comments, but it was mentioned in an article about older slow multiplying plants. Just wondering how fast or slow it does tend to grow in this area?

Guadalajara:

No comments on this one in the data base, but the description may say it all "very hot orange self". Any one out there grow this plant and have comments on it. I only have one double in my garden, and this looks like one of the few I would like.

Oh my that Guadalajara is just gorgeous!!!

It would be helpful to probably know scape height or flower size to do a search.

Hemlady,
I know to actually try and find a true match you would need a lot more information, but I would like to know how to describe the bloom (looking at the picture provided by Lilyaddict what would be the best description to pull up similar looking blooms? Just "Red" pulls up 16, 637 entries, way too many. "Red with green throat" pulls up 69 entries. Looking at this daylily how would the official description read? Something like "Red self with dark red watermark and green throat", is that darker red even called a watermark? How about the lighter red down further in the throat?

It is my understanding that a watermark is lighter color than the petal and an eye is a darker color than petal.
But can search be sorted by bloom size? That may help since her bloom is smaller? Also depending on how long she has had the flower and how long the person had it before her, one could eliminate alot of contenders by the age.

Which flower are we talking about, the first or second. The first is more red and I am assuming it is that one??? If so maybe, red, veined should be in the description.

Hemlady,
That looks very close, now how would you describe that bloom? "Red with black eye above green throat". That is how it is entered, I would have never thought of a "black eye", I guess darker red is often referred to as "black". That description only brings up five plants, so that really helps to narrow things down a bit.

The only thing I can think of is Mister Lucky, but am not sure if it is the same height and bloom size as your NOID. Also, Mister Lucky is very difficult to get a true color on (or maybe it is just my camera)
. Please check the database for color variations.

'Mister Lucky'

Described as below the search would be narrowed down to 42 entries in the data base.
Color description: Red with dark red eye zone
Bloom Traits: Eye or Band

I have often heard Velvet Eyes described as a black eye. There actually is a daylily called Black Eye and its eye is a deep dark purple.

My velvet eyes seems darker than the photo. I think Mister Lucky is really close. The only way to know is to get one to compare it. Mister Lucky was reg in 1995 so that is 20 yrs. Velvet Eyes is reg in 2001
