From this morning - need to figure out a way to diffuse the back lighting. All are FFO.

DANCING JUBILEE - took 2 days to open but worth the wait.

Thank you, everyone. I like it, too.

Tina, I submitted the SW photos for the database. Didn't realize when you do it from a thread that the photos have to go through the moderator, but they will show up sooner or later. Thank you for the encouragement. SW should be curved back, looking for that 'doughnut' shape on the next bloom.

Enjoyed your daylilies, Han! Your picture of Littorea made me look up the word's meaning ("littorea") and it is "spiral coiled shell" ... I imagine from the recurved petals and sepals. Very wonderful to see what others saw and found so beautiful in 1929. Also glad to see that people are rediscovering it in their own gardens today.

Found blooming in the far corner of my garden this morning is an older daylily called 'American Indian'.

Starts out butt ugly but -actually, turns into a quite nice bloom.

Eventually.

Now -just to be clear- I'm only uploading these photos to show how my much slimmer pocketbook buys smaller fans (or just one fan) and has to watch the daylily plant struggle through each day to (finally) reach an adequate self-sustainable size.

One-fan plants are o.k. with me, though -I just realize they will take longer to produce nice foliage and blooms....and maybe, years to make a decent clump.

Still, it's all good because it takes you through this long journey that educates you, builds up patience, and -often, I think the reward at the end (the bloom) is, somehow, sweeter.

Here's a few reality pictures of daylilies that I bought as scrawny little one-fan plants, now in their first season, having survived the Great Monster Winter of 2013-'14.

At least, (thank God!) they made it!

;)

You all have some beautiful blooms.
Michele certainly does also.
"Nicole's Breakfast 2013" wasn't registered yet...do you suppose it will be?

Here's "Purl Griffin" that I got May 12th from LA (Chocolatechiphorses) bareroot
(She is determined to bloom although her leaves are a tad tattered and her scapes really short)

Tina:

When I started with daylilies, I had always loved species. Even if the fulva Europe is of the flowers here are not comparable with newer varieties, yet the growth and resistance against animals is attractive. As the saying "back to the roots" gives a double meaning. To pick up a new features from the origin and combine it with new varieties. On the other hand, it is interesting to breed varieties for me, with deep and strong roots wich are not attractive to voles (as fulva).

My interest for wild shapes and high daylilies had then led me to New Varieties of Mahieu-Burris and Tamberg. Here then I've also found some inspiration. I am very glad that I could even get seeds from Burris (Rognvaldursson X .....)

With the littorea I'd like a spider hybridize which is directed upwards and so the petals hang down far. Many Impressions, ideas and hope

thx

My head is bubbling with joy - what great photos and descriptions from MissMimie, Pat, and Hans! I'm a big fan (and practitioner) of starting with single or double fans only and know how great it is when all the care finally results in a growing number of healthy, blooming fans. I learn so much from them, and likewise, from hearing your stories about them.

To see a really bountiful collection of daylilies that spans all the way from species, to vintage, and "golden oldies" of just a decade or more back really gives an inter-generational appreciation and big picture look at all the flowers that are so valuable to the daylily family, and offers new ways to look forward and to do new things. There are, after all, far more daylilies to appreciate than just a steady diet of introductions, as pretty as they are. Glad to see that such a wide variety is blooming in everyone's gardens!

So, special thanks you guys, for keeping those beauties in the lineup! Lovey dubby Thumbs up Group hug
