Composting Hint

By HollyAnnS

Make composting easy for everyone in the family to participate. Put a small attractive compost bucket next to the kitchen sink. With a composting bucket close at hand, you can catch each banana peel and all the coffee grounds.

We have been using something called 'The Fat Trapper' which is a plastic container meant to contain kitchen grease for proper disposal to keep it out of the waste water system. They were giving these away at Earth Day one year and since we don't create grease waste we re-purposed it for a compost container. It is a bit on the small side so I will be on the hunt for a lovely 'new' ice bucket, thanks! Thumbs up

Great idea Holly! I never would have thought of using an ice bucket for a little kitchen compost holder but what an economical idea; and as you stated, they can usually be found in thrift stores ... or sometimes hidden away in a kitchen cabinet. Green Grin! This brings back memories of my dear mother in law who alway kept a plastic container with a tight fitting lid by her kitchen sink where she'd place things for the compost pile; she also used to bury some food scraps right in the garden.

Well, that definitely looks much nicer than the ice cream bucket that I keep in the (attached) garage. Good suggestion, Holly! Thumbs up

Thanks for the great tip! I actually have a couple ice buckets that I picked up at a thrift store because I liked the way they looked (and they were very cheap), but never use them. I never thought of re-purposing them to use as a compost bucket. I'm going to go and dig them out of my garage right now . . .
