That's good info to know Melanie about the difference. I didn't know that and will watch for one...that is if I even get any...so few of anything for me this year Confused

Thanks Melanie.
I'd mentioned to my wife I'd thought it might not be a Monarch, maybe a Viceroy; but w/o an open dorsal wing shot (where the circular long line is displayed so well and their seldom made appearance in the garden, 3 times here) went w/ the Monarch designation.
Thumb of 2014-07-05/jmorth/5c6515 (pic from 2008, also ID-ed twice in 2011).
I'll put the Viceroy name on the pic and put it in my Named BFs file for future reference.

Interesting about the Viceroy/Monarch, very interesting. I did a Google for it & came up with this. Amazing how much they look alike!

See, Question Marks are one of those butterflies I never see, either. Saw one at a cemetery in WV when I was genealogy hunting. It's funny, I was inspired to move my photos from my old computer over to my new computer this morning. I was going through them, deleting things I didn't need anymore, and updating some genealogy I'd never gotten around to on Ancestry. And I was laughing at my pictures because you can see chronologically where I walked through a cemetery, got distracted by butterflies for a while, then went back to the gravestones, and so forth. But a lot of the cemeteries are pretty rural and weedy so they make for good butterfly spots. And the artificial flowers do fool the butterflies, by the way. But only for a second. It's fun when my hobbies come together like that.

That Tiger ST literally in that daylily is making me laugh.

Here's a Viceroy I raised back in 2010. See what I mean about how they're dark like Queens not orange like Monarchs?

Well, tomorrow we should have Malachites at the museum. And I get to train the new person. I have no idea how much experience she has so this could be fun. It's always fun, but sometimes it's more fun than others. So look forward to many pictures from MOSI tomorrow!

Went out soon after dusk and to my surprise discovered this Hummingbird Moth zipping around. I usually don't see them till later in the season when the re-seeded flowering tobacco is flowering extensively.

Jim how did you stop his wings like that?

Wish my camera would do that when I press the button! Jack is a wonderful name. I have a grandfather, uncle and three cousins and a great nephew called Jack.

Good morning!

It's been over a month since my boy and I saw monarch caterpillars on our backyard milkweed.

Yesterday we spotted the tiny eggs and today, tiny caterpillars!

Thumb of 2014-07-06/MamaIve12/303594

I never get tired of seeing this process in our own backyard. Planning to start a project with the boys to see how many types of butterflies we can identify in our neighborhood.
