With this earthquake, aside from reading and hearing about the damages around, it somehow helps to read on about the science about it. I like this article I saw awhile ago: http://space.io9.com/geology-o...

So many fault lines..just have to be thankful the quake has not triggered others yet...

I've never worried really about quakes, though it is a bit unnerving to know how many small ones hit California everyday....If the Cascadia Fault goes, I doubt that I will be here to talk about it...lol..

Sue, I hadn't heard about the fatality - tragic!

I hope that FEMA comes through for your niece, Sherry! We DO have earthquake insurance. Yes, it's expensive, but (as I mentioned) my DH's experience with the Santa Cruz quake makes him view it as a necessity.

Liz, later I heard an autopsy is pending and she had a medical condition so they said it may not be quake related, just a coincidence but won't know for sure until later.

This was a winery we had visited in the past, their historic building shifted quite a bit!

"Owner Janet Trefethen, right, and president Jon Ruel, left, talk about the earthquake damage to the historic winery building, seen in the background, dating from 1886 at Trefethen Family Vineyards Monday, Aug. 25, 2014, in Napa, Calif. The winery is hopeful they can save the building after San Francisco Bay Area's strongest earthquake in 25 years struck the heart of California's wine country early Sunday."

I'm glad all of you ATPers are o.k. I remember the Northridge Earthquake, which I think was 6.6 and that was pretty scary. I thought that at any minute the apartment building would come crashing down around me. The power went out and I went into the kitchen to get the flashlight. I stepped on a broken bottle of Karo syrup and cut my foot a little. It left a little blood spot on the carpet that I never could get out. I did get out the Karo syrup tracks. But note to self and everyone else, don't go roaming around in the dark in your bare feet after a big earthquake.

That's the first thing I thought..."What were these people thinking?" I suppose at the time they were not thinking at all....

At least...always keep a flashlight by your bed.....a lot of people had no power to find anything.

For as many earthquakes as I've lived through they still freak me out.
The bldg. I live in was built in 1928 and survived the 1933 Long Beach earthquake unscathed. They built things much sturdier back in the day...but even still, half of this city got leveled when that one hit.

When we lived near L.A. in the '70's the Sylmar earthquake toppled a 60 gallon fish tank I had in my bedroom. After the initial hoopla of that incident we looked outside and the block wall separating us from the neighbors had come down. Of course, my dad rebuilt the wall with that same hideous pink concrete block. We didn't see our cat for over a week after that quake.

In the Northridge earthquake entire sections of the 10 Fwy collapsed. To this day I refuse to stop under one of those overpasses at a red light.

Oh, yes. The freeway collapses and bridge collapses are the scariest things. Remember Loma Prieta in 1989? All of those people on the freeway in Oakland were crushed when the top deck of the freeway collapsed. Also, part of the upper deck of the Bay Bridge fell onto the lower deck. Horrifying!

I'll never forget the shots of that gaping hole right in front of a car that stopped just in time. You could see other cars down in the hole. Shudder, shudder!

Do I remember correctly that a new one is being built that is better engineered for earthquakes?

Speaking of strong quakes, I will never forget what we endured during a very strong one in the Phil in 1990. Though the epicenter was in the mountain resort city of Baguio, we felt it too in Manila. We were at work when the building swayed, like in a swing, then the rattling of all the ceilings, windows, everything around us..we all just ducked under whatever we can get in, then a sudden up and down strong jolt..I just kept praying for it to stop. I really thought we will die at that moment, as soon as it stopped, we all made a mad dash to go out of the building, afraid it will eventually crash on us. A lot of people died in that quake especially in Baguio, hotels and homes just crashed like an accordion and all those infrastructure damage everywhere. And we were about 121 miles away from that epicenter when we felt it. Then almost a year after a strong volcanic eruption from a dormant volcano came about, from Mt. Pinatubo. There has been on and off indications the volcano is imminently going to erupt. The American military base evacuated just in the nick of time, I think just about 2 days before the actual eruption. And we were at the mall, ready to go home in the afternoon, I cannot remember now if there was a slight earthquake, but the skies, turned really pitch black in the middle of the afternoon. Then the ensuing ashfall. Terrible times then. Having to go to work wearing masks, it is suffocating to breathe. Mother Nature just at her worst at that time. So many towns got buried there..so sad. Terrible even up to now.

So I get freaked out too, and really commiserate for all those in Napa. After the shock as reality of the damage sets in...it will be real tough living for awhile. Hopefully it is not a precursor to anything. Just let those little quakes quiver away slowly and let the people recover.

My niece's house in Napa that got whacked by the quake...the house is yellow tagged, which I'd never heard of before...according to online info that means the house is habitable in daylight hours only, I don't know where they're spending nights...and the garage is red tagged (off the foundation)
