Oh, that one is pretty! I only seem to see the ligher pink coloreed ones around here.

Haha. They say Phalaenopsis orchids are super easy, but I've killed my share.

Planto, the dipladenia splendens/mandevilla are not hardy in zone 8a, but the pink colored Mandevilla 'Alice Dupont' die down to the ground in winter and return in the spring, if they are well mulched. I've had mine for at least 3 years.

I also grow Spider plants, though I do not bother anymore knowing what cultivar it is. All I know, it thrives so well here, so well that I end up giving lots of them away. But I still keep a good bunch here, mostly outdoors and one indoors growing in clay rocks and water. Those that are outdoors, they get full sun to part shade the rest of the day. But if the plant is still very young, best to keep in part shade till it matures a little more, otherwise it just gets fried. Once it is very mature, it is drought tolerant. I do always give it an early morning shower at least every 2 days especially when we expect to hit the upper 90's to triple digit heat.

Speaking about Phal orchids..I grow them, it does take a certain amount of discipline to grow them. From my experience they are easier than most other orchids to grow in the sense that they can can grow and bloom indoors even without extra lighting add-ons. But like any other plant it has its own cultural requirement to be met. Most of the time even in other forums , their foremost mistake at times is not recognizing the dry rest time, watering and air circulation needs of the plant. I enjoy growing them, they bloom for me during late winter to early Spring lasting for 4 to 6 months. Smiling

I buy the grocery store Orchids as decoration for the holidays. I promptly kiil every one I have ever purchased. But the Blooms usually last from Nov to March. Buy the end of Winter the next year is when I usually lose them. I have tried to figure out the water schedule. I either underwater them or over water them.

I think the one on the left is a 'Hawaiian' that hasn't quite "matured" yet (I figure only time will tell if it's not) and the one on the right is just a plain 'ol all-green variety.

My 'Bonnie' baby. What I find interesting about this little fella is that I removed him from a 'Green Bonnie' which sports no variegation.

Chlorophytum laxum 'Bichetii' (On the left, at purchase. On the right, taken just the other day (I bought this one as a clearance plant)).

Planto, do you remember on one of the other posts that I said made a comment about a pure green but I am not sure...well the reason I was not sure was because it was shooting a baby and the baby was variegated just like yours, but it is too small to see exactly what it is going to be. I am told Hawaiian's shoot variegated babies that turn green when they mature.

These plants all seem to have little quirks.. I love them.

Y'all do so well with the Chlorophytum, beautiful job! I've never seemed to have much luck with them as potted plants, the leaves would always end up ratty looking when I had hanging baskets but at our old house I had one hanging basket that was in a tree and when the long stems touched the ground, the "pups" took root and spread beneath the tree and it made a nice groundcover. They seem to do much better in the ground for me probably because they get regular watering from the irrigation system. The only spider plant I have now is the solid green one which is in a pot beneath a shrub in the yard ... where the dog keeps trampling it. :grumbling:

I was just browsing the photo's of the newest additions to our database and although this is not a Spider Plant, it sure resembles one doesn't it? It's not related to Chlorophytum but it sure is pretty and the leaves sure resemble those of Chlorophytum.

My spiders are very old. In 1974, I asked for cuttings at a Burger King with great hanging plants. Other than the original Swedish Ivy, I still have them. So if anyone wants Wandering Jew, green or variegated Spiders, arrange postage. I also have a 40 year old Angel Wing Cane Begonia that could use trimming. I am good at mailing plants, so if anything floats your boat Tree Mail me. I have another 2? weeks before I cannot ship from Southern Maine and maybe I shouldn't ship any farther North now.

@JB,
I do remember you giving me some very good information on 'Hawaiian' spider plants. The one pictured above (beside the all-green one) is the one in question I was referring to in that post where we discussed 'Hawaiian' spider plants. I still seen any change in the leaves, but as soon as one starts turning green (or however long from now it's huge and it still looks the same), I'll let you know something. I rooted it myself back in April(?) and it has probably quadrupled in size (the three babies were rather small when they arrived in the mail), but it's not the fastest growing 'Spider Plant' I've ever had. Hilarious!

If it's not a 'Hawaiian,' that's alright, I still don't have a plain variegated spider plant (aside from the 'Bonnie' pup).

Spider plants are so easy to care for, I can't imagine anyone not wanting a spider plant, or two, or ten. I just don't have the space for anymore right now. In fact, I have no more space for anything. Crying I think I saw an 'Ocean' the other day at a local Kroger and I'll be darned, I had to walk away. Hubby thinks I have a good number of plants right now... just wait, we'll have a house full of space one day. Lovey dubby

@Lin,
I have noticed with spider plants outdoors, they do take on a more ratty look to them. I had one that was outside most of the year and the ones I have indoors look so much better. Hilarious! I like your green spider plant. Poor thing, dogs don't pay attention to where they're walking sometimes!

That sedge picture sure does look like a spider plant.

@Linneaj,
Wow, that plant is older than me! *Blush*

Check out the Green Bonnie on eBay for $17.00. I can't see any curl, but maybe it is my bad sight? Free shipping means the shipping is about $10.00 and the plant is worth about $7.00 unless they do not ship priority, then it will be really curly and wilted before it arrives. JB, that Sedge photo is not mine ... I'm not sure what type of flowers the Sedge gets, the info in the database for the one in the above photo says the flowers are brownish in color.

Another plant that reminds me of the Spider Plant is Dianella which is another popular landscape plant here in Florida. The variegated Dianella that I have gets tiny little yellowish flowers:

That is a lot for green Bonnie spider plants. I saw a very nice size hanging basket in a Home Depot last week for $10.98. They had gobs of babies on them. I didn't get it because DH was with me, and I already had several plants in my buggy. He gave me the evil eye when he saw them. Hilarious! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing I do have way too many plants. Whistling I may get one the next time I go back alone.

In our common area here,along the pathways, this plant reminds me also of spider plants..but it is Liriope, when in bloom it has bloom stalks with purplish flowers.

Linneaj,
That's true. I found a ZZ Plant stalk about a month or so ago and have successfully rooted it. I know they tend to just sweep stuff up like that and chunk it in the trash.
