So glad there is an aroid forum! Does anyone know if 'Boa' goes dormant? Mine did not freeze at all but died back when it got colder. I brought it in and put it under lights but it has not come back. The bulb is firm though. Will it come back if I put it back outside in the spring?

Plant nurseries and orchid supplier's usually carry the horticultural grade charcoal.

Yes the leaves are turning yellowish and I am getting worried. So I better do something soon, or will have a dead plant.
Thanks, Lin. for charcoal facts.

Dawn, you and Stephanie appear close enough to join us in St. Louis! We'd really like to have a bunch of aroiders there. Besides, the garden will be gorgeous and if you've never seen their tropical rain forest under glass you'll be in awe!

Sorry I haven't been in here. Still trying to figure out all the cubits Smiling
Steve, When is your thing in St. Louis. I would love to take a road trip (weather permitting). Especially if it has anything to do with plants Hurray!

Doesn't anyone else grow the 'Boa' ? It is fairly new but I thought maybe someone else would know something about it. It seems pickier than most of my many others.

April 24 at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Just visit the IAS site www.Aroid.org

Look for chapter meetings on the homepage and click the link. You'll find the entire day's events. The info is also on FACEBOOK, just scroll down the page.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/...

The biggie is the tour of the research greenhouse since this isn't open to the public. There are thousands of wild collected aroid species in there and in April many should be in bloom with an inflorescence. Dr. Croat is very good at giving visitors juvenile specimens they grow from seed but I can't guarantee what might be around at that time. I do know he specifically wrote on day's events there would be a plant exchange. I am also bringing some small plants from my collection to give away. I can guarantee the plants Tom gives away will be fairly rare!

We do need to know how many people to expect so please either send a note to Zach DuFran (address on the schedule) or to me: [email protected]

I will also be doing a presentation on how we built our "rain forest".

Does a leopard Squill belong in this family? I have one. Can't remember seeing a bloom. Hope this isn't a silly question.

I'm baack!!

A brief comment about Alocasia 'Boa'. As far as I know, it is (should) be in the same group as Alocasia lauterbachiana and Alocasia 'Nishishira'. These all used to be considered to be in a separate genus, Xenophya. Their inflorescences are so unique when compared to other Alocasia that I still feel that they should be kept separate from other Alocasia.

Now as far as culture is concerned, Boa is more finicky than many other Alocasias, and in some cases, much more finicky. They don't really go dormant so if yours has "gone dormant" it might have "gone south" instead. I lost a lot of A. lauterbachiana during the Great Freeze of 2010 here in Florida. My Boa was in a greenhouse so it just lost most of its leaves.

Hope this helps!

I have both boa and lauterbachiana. I purchased both of them last fall as starter plants. I actually have them planted in solo cups in regular potting soil sitting under fluorescent light bulbs. Ignorance is bliss I guess! Ha! ha! They have done well all winter. Have pretty much doubled in size. Still small though, as they were starter plants. I haven't had any problems with them at all. I plan on moving them to the east flower bed this spring. My elephant ears seem to love it there.

Also got brancifolia, stingray, elepaio and royal hilo as starter plants. Got sarian and portii last year. Love the color of sarian. Managed to snag metallica and wentii variagata this winter. Can't wait to move them outside and see them grow!

That is so funny, we must shop at the same places. I got the same plants, except metallica, and rather than royal hilo, I got hilo beauty which we are now calling a caladium, lol.
