I'm biding on an aloe cutting. Could someone tell me how to root it when I get it.

I hope it's not a leaf cutting. Aloes don't propagate from leaves.

It's a cutting off of a tree aloe with a rosette and some stem.

I don't have personal experience with rooting an Aloe, so I can't advise you on how to go about it. I just wanted to be sure it wasn't a leaf cutting.

I have read you need to have some part of the base of that aloe with the cutting, allow the cut base end to dry and scab over for a few days, then plant on dry soil, put it in shade..and wait for the roots to form..do not water while waiting for the roots to form.

Oops..don't know if it is the same approach with a tree aloe though.

We've rooted quite a few Aloe cuttings at the Botanical Garden where I work, and used the process tarev describes. Use a very well draining medium.

How about pure perlite?

That's the same way we root Sansevieria. Must have at least 1 inch of rhizome 2 inches being best. I use a fine gravel mix. Heavier and holds plant in place and must be free draining. Sounds the same. I also use a clear plastic container and after a month, start to see roots, then I know I can start to water. But very lightly.

Personally using grow lights, I put all my cuttings in full light it seems to help them root! (so agree with everything except the shade part - since it'll be indoors you want it under your light Adam. Good luck and let us know what happens!

When they said shade, they mean away from the Hot Sun. Not a cool fluorescent lamp, which I agree with you about. This was the way my seedlings got off to such a good start.
