That's the same way we root Sansevieria. Must have at least 1 inch of rhizome 2 inches being best. I use a fine gravel mix. Heavier and holds plant in place and must be free draining. Sounds the same. I also use a clear plastic container and after a month, start to see roots, then I know I can start to water. But very lightly.
