Just a few broms from the court at Rockefeller Center in NYC. Even on a rainy day, the fourth pic shows some sun damage. There were so many gorgeous bromeliads to photograph, but the rain came and we chickens ran inside.

These are all pups and mostly from Tropiflora in Sarasota. The shade loving Neos are under the Sago while the sun lovers are where they want to be.

Hey Hap, Marlies takes a good hour or so every day to excercise in the pool. Since we've had no sun in like a long time, the water is too cold for me. I'm a sissy in that regard. I've been getting complaints about the water temperature from the distaff side and just went to check the remote that controls everything. Stupid thing didn't tell me the batteries were dead. No wonder the water is so cold. The heater is supposed to take over when the sun don't shine. Alas, it was no longer in charge of the process. Now I know why the water is not to my liking.

And Jeri, when we go to a botanic garden, I recognize most things and can always say I have one of those too. I just don't remember all the names and the tags in the professional gardens are so much better then my feeble efforts.

Funny how so many plants can disappear in such a small piece of land. Can't wait to see these broms when they all grow up.

We have a solar system as the heater for the pool and it's a Solar -Star thermastat and it's connected to the electric and we have had it for quite a long time.

As I said Hap, the sun has not been doing its part and the propane heater did not kick in as the remote's batteries were dead. It's all fixed now. The buckets of rain also make the existing water cooler. I don't think we've had any sun for about a week now.

There was some sun in the morning when I got a chance to spray my weeds but then came the rains again in the afternoon and night. Lots of water in our drainage ditch.

I still need more broms and am waiting for lots of pups to grow so that I can spread them around

Hi Fred,

No, no batteries anywhere. My sprinklers are on an electric timer and zoned. My pool is heated by solar panels and is also on a temp control that is electric which moderates the pool temp. The solar panels really only work well in the spring, summer, fall, for the winter temps it just can not handle it. But no batteries!!! I don't have any remotes because everything (2) are on a timer. Can't trust my mind to do remotes, Fred! LOL

Then how do you set temp requirements and pump and light timing etc? My whole pool and landscape lighting is controlled via a remote. I can see the air and water temps on a screen on the remote and change anything from the comfort of a chair. It's like your TV remote except that it does the pool. See:

But back to bromeliads. I can't help photographing the Neo. 'Scarlet Charlotte'. Did a walk around today in between rainshowers.


The plants are growing nicely. They were all rootless baby pups when I planted them in June and July. I can see now which ones get bigger and which ones stay small and need filler plants beteen them

Marlies only points here and there where I need to do something. She also keeps complaining about ants. Those little buggers are everywhere and I keep trying to kill them but they just pop up in another place. It's a constant hassle. When the rains keep coming down, they dig there way to the surface I guess not to drown but then I have these dirt piles all over the place.

I grow some bromeliads pups in pots filled with mulch. I just want them to grow some roots and acclimatize to my lighting as all of them come from shade houses. When I then transplant them, the pots are full of ants. They're also in my orchid pots. Anything above ground. I hate them and they hate me. Got me in the toes again today.

Anyway, Marlies wants the water warm and that's where we started, right? She's on daily Forteo shots now and the side effects are joint and muscle pains but they are now slowly going away. I guess her body has adjusted. She's a trooper and I wish I would have had my camera handy as she came back from her morning 4 mile bike ride in the pouring rain yesterday. One minute the sun is out and the next, a cloud comes by and dumps its contents. She looked pittyful all soaking wet but smiling as I was cracking up. I came running to meet her with two umbrellas but it was too late.

To answer your question - the garden is really my thing.
