I'm looking for some blackish colored flowers to plant w my daylilies. I really like things that come back reliably year after year and bloom alot and still look nice even when they are not blooming. Any suggestions? Would love to see pictures of black flowers in your landscape.

Sweet William has dark cultivars.
It is biennial, but might reseed.
This year I am hoping to grow the "Blackberry" cultivar of petunia.
There is a hollyhock with "black" flowers.
Nemophilia has a black form. (annual).

There is a "Black Velvet" Nasturtium.
And also a "Black Beauty" Dahlia.

All of these are more like annuals.

Do you want something that flowers with the Daylilies, or at other times through the season?

I grow the black Hollyhock, and it does really look black in the sun, but it does get bug eaten and ugly when not blooming.

Well I don't like to spray pesticides unless I have a real problem. I do have some hibiscus that I sprayed last year because the japanese beetles were eating it so badly, and my roses also. But the hollyhocks I had around the front porch just looked so ratty I don't think I would plant them again. I tried some black tulips but the moles? ate them promptly after planting, I guess they are tasty.

I wouldn't care if it bloomed with the daylilies or not. I guess even black foliage might be nice. I have a black colored elderberry, but I think it says shade on the tag if I remember right.

I have a black elderberry and it's fantastic in our full, blazing 100°+ sun. It never even flinches.
This pic isn't the greatest but you get the idea. They do get bigger than I had planned and have to trim it back every year or two.

I don't spray either. Just seems counter intuitive to toxify the place I like to spend my time and invite butterflies and hummingbirds. I have tried some home made sprays with garlic and hot pepper and other herbs, but they need to be applied frequently, and I don't keep up with it like I should.

Frilly do you have black daylilies too?

Yes I do have a handful of black daylilies. They are hard to come by. Of course like all flowers none are really black, they appear black from a distance. But all are either purple or red colored. I like daylilies that ope out really flat or recurve and some of the more popular black daylilies do not open as far as I'd like. But the ones I do have I like pretty well.

I thought about chocolate cosmos but the database pics show it pretty red colored and not as dark as I'd like. Is there a hardy hibiscus with dark flowers? I do have 3 of those but all are pink colors. Oh, I did pick up a red one last fall but haven't planted it out yet, it is still potted.

Hearthrob is pretty dark. That's the darkest hardy hib I know of.

well there are no pics of that hibiscus in the database. Maybe someone has one they can add.

These little black Violas really do appear black- some of the blackest blooms I've seen.


And there are several near black Iris varieties....

Bowles' Black is another black viola.

There is a Bachelor button which has deep maroon almost black flowers.

Isn't there an almost black poppy too?

I have had Columbine Black Barlow and loved it.

What killed them? I lost some several years ago to sawfly larvae, they completely decimated the plants in 2 days, just as buds were starting to arise. That happened 2 years in a row, after that I started treating with systemic in spring and found 1 treatment was enough to protect them during the time the larvae emerge. Since then I've stopped using chemicals, but haven't had any problems since. I had grown Columbine for several years and had never seen them attacked like that, and now it seems to have stopped. It may have had something to do with several really mild winters we had during that time.
