I think my neighbor has a big clump of that... if so, I'll ask her for some.

It's easy to get starts off of Terese. Melanie, go find it! Thumbs up They're really pretty too. The slightest breeze has the bloom stalks dancing and the bees keep them dancing all the time but they're really TOUGH XERI plants. I had them down south & they held up like champs. I wasn't sure how they would do during winter here but they have been blooming continually & the hard freezes we've had haven't even phased them -- mine are in a slightly protected location here but I don't think they would have taken a hit even if they weren't -- we've had some very hard freezes this year.

Most hummers in central Florida show up in Winter as they migrate south to us. Some will stick around while others move further south to south FL or Mexico. BUT ... if you are near the west coast of FL, there is a possibility that you might have summer breeding Ruby-throated hummingbirds. There are two groups that move through FL. There are the breeding Ruby-throated hummers than come in Spring and stay until late Summer. They leave to go back to Mexico in the Fall. Then the northern breeding Ruby-throated hummers come to FL for the Winter. We do NOT have year round resident Ruby-throats. A study proved that there are no hummers that live here year round. It is two different groups of birds that may seem like some Ruby-throated hummingbirds are here all year. Near impossible to tell one adult male or female from another, so people often mistake several birds as 1 single bird. Ruby-throats do indeed breed in Florida during the Spring/Summer but that is only is certain areas of FL, not all of Florida. And over-wintering hummers are typically seen from central FL down into the FL Keys. A lot of people in FL do not know we have hummingbirds here during the year. I never saw one until I started planting hummingbird nectar plants.

You won't get a LOT of birds. Maybe only 1 or 2 or perhaps a few more that stay around your area (and yard) during those seasons. Honestly, the best way to attract more than 1 is to set up areas they can claim as territory. It also helps if they can't easily see each other when they claim a territory. So having plants all the way around your front and back yard is the best way to attract more. You will need small trees for them to perch in for each territory. And lots of nectar blooming plants. And a feeder in each area for them to claim. I put out 4-6 feeders every Winter. Most of them get used regularly, some on occasion when a new bird or two comes through.

There is a hummingbird host near the west coast of Central Florida that gets anywhere from 6-15 hummers every Winter. He also gets quite a variety of hummingbird species. Not just Ruby-throated hummers. I wished I lived nearer to the west coast of central Florida. You can learn more about his yard:

Up here where I am the hummers are summer/fall residents. They aren't here in the winter but I sure love having them all through summer & fall! Thumbs up

Terese - You might be some summer breeders where you are. Keep an eye out throughout the year to determine when you get them.

Ann - You have breeding hummingbirds. (Not over-wintering hummers.) You might be able to spot a nest with babies if you watch closely where they are flying after eating.

I put out safflower seeds and oiled sunflower seeds cause I love the cardinals and doves that come to feeders.

For the butterflies I have lantana, calico vine, cross vine, milkweed, butterfly weed and a few salvias. Past 2 years have had many zebra long wings. Hope for same t his year.

Lantana camara is an invasive in Florida so be careful which kind you plant. Also, Calico Vine, if you mean the pipevine, is a non-native species that will support the Polydamas Swallowtail but will kill the Pipevine Swallowtails.

My first week in FL last Oct, walking thru Lowes, I snagged a Lantana in full bloom ... since then I've read they can be invasive.

Bonnie -- My DH wont let me put out seeds [ I have many feeders in WI] because of the rats. I back up to a "naturalized" area... so I have a lot of birds.

I have many 40+ Scarlet Milkweed seeds that have germinated, so I'll have plenty of those. I have seeds for the "common" MW A. syriaca
though I think they need cold strat.... I'll have to look more into that.. but maybe I'll just toss some seeds and by the time I get back in Sept, they will have germinated.

have to say... the pool is calling me today. Think I'm going to be lazy.

My Caladiums from Bill are coming this week along with the shepherd hooks I had to order.
so the end of the week may be busier. OH got my rain barrel set up -- well DH did. I need to plant the verbena i the top planter.

I keep telling people about buying plants from HD, Lowe's & WalMart --- please read the following links. These plants are killing pollinators b/c they contain neonicotinoids from being sprayed/treated with them. This substance stays in the plant for YEARS. YEARS.
And don't think that because you go in & see bees or butterflies nectaring on the plants that means they are safe plants. That only means they are not getting enough immediate contamination to kill them outright on the spot but their immune systems are being compromised and they will die later.
Please read these links & judge for yourself.

Ann -- yes, I know. **Hangs head in shame** I had never heard of this neonicotinoids until you mentioned it earlier. I have not purchased anymore plants since, and plan to only get them at local nurseries now... many plants i'm trying to grow from seed.

No problem Terese. I just think people should know and then they can make their own decisions form that point. I did read something but can't find it now that HD was working with some org. to try & find suppliers who do not use neonicotinoids. It will take time though but hope is on the horizon.
