Vapor would be classified as an amoena-plicata, I think. All sorts of patterns are appearing.

Vapor:

Ghio, 2002

I hope this doesn't come across as a flippant answer, but the reason is someone (probably me) checked the Plicata box instead of the Luminata box. Shrug!

Keep in mind, there is nothing remotely "official" about how the terms in the Flower Patterns field are used in the Iris Database. Even within AIS, there is no official determination that a given iris is a "luminata" or a "plicata" or an "amoena" or a "neglecta" or whatever. It's just generally understood what those terms mean and, like anything that's generally understood, it's subject to interpretation.

Most of the information in the Iris Database is taken directly from the AIS registry, but some of it is not and the Flower Patterns field is one of those. Flower Patterns are included in the database for one reason, and one reason only. It's a search aid.

Say you want to add some luminatas to your garden, but you don't know which ones. Go to http://garden.org/plants/group..., click the box for Luminata, hit "Search".

You won't get every luminata ever hybridized (somebody would have had to check the box in the database), and you'll probably get some that don't match your personal idea of what a luminata should look like (some irises don't fit neatly in the categories we make up for them), but you'll get a nice long list and it might help you find the irises you want for your garden.

That's all it's there for. Shrug! But, as far as I know, there's no other database on the web that allows you to search for irises this way. Some commercial growers have websites that sort of have the capability, but they generally just include the varieties they sell.

Vapor is an amoena because of the white S & dark F. the falls are marked in a plicata pattern, therefore an amoena-pliacta. As for our color categories, let's not even go there. Smiling

Well. I was laboring under the assumption that the hybridizer was the one who decided what designation their creation was. You have answered an unasked question for me as well -- I've recently been looking for these pattern designations in catalogs and wondering why they were not there!!

What an interesting conversation this has turned out to be. Kent -- thank you for your post -- and I didn't think it was flippant at all! Smiling

Lucy -- that's what I was looking for -- the reasons why someone would select that designation for Vapor, as an example. It makes perfect sense to me that the white standards would make it an Amoena. And I guess the falls have a plicata pattern --you're referring to the *lines and speckles*, right? Now my next question is this: is there such a THING as an Amoena Plicata? I've never seen that designation before -- the only qualifiers that I've ever seen on Irises is the Reverse designation, i.e. Reverse Amoena.

Now Lucy -- when you say "as for color categories, let's not even go there" -- you're scaring me......... I'm worried that you're gonna tell me that blue is not blue..... Blinking

That's a shame -- it's beautiful. I've never seen some of these Luminatas before.

I think Hot Topic was among the group of irises that vanished from my garden this year. I don't recall which ones they all were, so I list them in the dead group. I agree it is a beauty and I will replace it one day.

That type of designation (Amoena-plicata : ) gets yapped about among hybridizers. Whistling
