I do either way..stick it lightly in soil especially if it is dry here already or just on top of the soil. If the roots stick up, I just carefully add some more soil on top to gently guide roots to the soil.

Or eventually, the roots showing outwards will dry up and by that time, other roots more to the soil line would have been growing into the soil already.

Watch out for that Kalanchoe....A while back, I found a volunteer rooting in some succulent pots, got really excited and babied it, now I am pulling them up and out all over the place!!! A little TOO successful of a plant!!!

Yes it does the same here. I suspect anywhere below the frost-zone.

I have them in quite a few pots too, from babies falling off of leaves, but find that when I offer the excess for postage, I get more requests than I have plants. I knew it was a "weed" when I appropriated a cutting from a plant growing out of a crack in a parking lot in New Orleans, but it's just cold & wet enough for winter here that no wayward plants have shown up in the landscape. I absolutely love the cheerful blooms that show up inside over winter.

Wow, that's interesting!!! Though I remember moving from Virginia and being so excited to see this succulent growing naturally everywhere...I thought, YES! I live somewhere that has wild succulents!!!

It's been just over a month since I harvested the leaves in this tray. Some of them aren't doing anything, though others of the same type, same plant, are already growing & potted. The tiny Sedum rubrotinctum leaves in the middle look like they're starting to go, very happy about that.

These Kalanchoe marnieriana & Echeveria look ready for a pot.
Thumb of 2015-04-11/purpleinopp/b50739

Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi. Done these a few times, these babies seem reluctant to grow roots or develop chlorophyll, generally. A much lower success rate with these babies than other kinds of Kalanchoe/Bryophyllum that make leaf-edge babies.

The last leaf I put has continued to form babies, which have grown, but they're not making roots yet.

A month later update:

My winter experiment in a grow tent. The ones on the furthermozt right are the ones I poster earlier. Most had already tripled in size before putting them in here. Mix of Echeveria, Pachyphytum, Pachyveria, Graptopetalum Graptoveria and Sedeveria.
