Today I dug them all up and they have rot. I cut out the really bad parts and am soaking what's left in hopes that I can save some. It was a clump of about 30 rhizomes...and I had promised to share some with Greg and Linnea...but I don't know if any of it will survive. The good news is that Rob has graciously offered to send me some mine doesn't make it.
It is certainly not a type of rot caused by too much moisture, and it didn't rebloom last year...so I'm not sure what got it. Maybe the stress of not having enough water? I'll have to re-read some of the information that was posted recently. The rhizomes were firm but the leaves began to die back, and on the ones where the rot had not progressed as much the newest inner leaf was light green and limp even though the outer leaves looked fine. This one seems to attack the leaves from the inside out, so by the time you notice it it is too late.
The remaining rhizomes are soaking in bleach. I'm not sure about whether I should try to find a fungicide to use too. I am concerned about the rest of the irises in the same bed. The Polish Princess clump was growing into the Celebration Song clump...so I'll have to watch that one carefully.
